Truck died on me yesterday. Seemed like it ran out of fuel, so I got a push into the station, put $50 worth of diesel in it. Pulled fuel filter, topped off bowl, cranked, pulled filter again and cranked to watch the bowl fill up. Triple checked all fuses, swapped cps with a buddy that is known working. Did have a p340 code, which led me to believe cam sensor. I've swapped batteries from a known good truck too. Checked cps wiring harness all the way up to the hpop res, all looked good. Cranked with icp unplugged, no start. Low pressure oil gauge comes up, while cranking truck builds over 3000 psi icp, hpop res is full, ipr hits 45 percent dc cranking, 15 percent koeo. Replaced ipr pigtail, wait to start light comes on, etc.... I'm not new to the 7.3, hell I used to work on them daily, but I'm stumped. Truck had been sitting for 4-5 years, I bought it and drove it home about 30 miles no problem, and probably put 15 miles on it after that. Like I said, it seemed like it ran out of fuel, I shifted from 1st to 2nd, seemed to bog down, shifted to 3rd and died. Any ideas obs guys?

Does it buzz test? Did you check fuel psi at bowl? Many odd things can happen with a truck sitting that long.

Buzz tests fine. I have not checked fuel pressure yet. Thats on my next to do list. The bowl did seem to fill kind of slow, but idk. I haven't worked on many obs' s. A lot of super duties though

does it seem like the tach isnt moving enough? i realize it reads high, but thats my fault for pulling the needle off the cluster during my cleaning/armoralling of the cluster, so it does read a few hundred rpm's high. im starting to wonder if it isnt a cps wiring issue...

That tach looks like it moves enough to me. About a two rpm jump is what you are looking for. Have you unplugged the fuel bowl heater yet And checked the related fuse? I have seen where the fuel bowl heater goes bad and blows a fuse and the pickup will turn off and not start.

What temps do you have right now? sounds almost like it gelled. But could just be junk in the selector valve.

Bowl heater is unplugged and fuses have been triple checked. It was 50ish degrees outside, so its not gelled fuel. Tell me more about the selector valve

Push in the valve on the side of the fuel bowl and get any air that might be in fuel lines.

If for some reason the tank got rusty sitting there for so many years, There is a good chance it broke loose and plugged the pickup or the selector valve. Another thing, Have you checked the screen in the fuel bowl? There is also a harness that runs under the fuel bowl that will keep it from starting if it is unplugged.

My guess is I ran it out of fuel and killed the pump... hopefully tomorrow ill have a chance to check fuel pressure

I have run those pumps out of fuel so many time and have never had a problem. Its not like it is electric its just a diaphragm pump. If it smokes a little it must be getting some fuel. But might not be getting the pressure or volume needed to make the pressure needed to start.

That would be a wise move checking the fuel pressure. In a pinch you can have somebody crank it while you hold a tire pressure gauge to the stem on the side of the pressure regulator.

Fpr screen is gone, I have not pulled the bowl, but I did wiggle/pull on that harness under the bowl with the irp pigtail and the others, and nothing seemed unplugged. I know about the schrader valve at the fpr, and that is my next plan to check fuel pressure there. Like I've said, I'm well endowed with 7.3's, just not obs' s in particular. I did have to pull the fpr completely off the bowl due to my clumsy ass dropping the ipr solenoid into the valley, and I found it strange that neither return line (at least I believe they're the return lines, the two fuel lines with 9/16 fittings at the fpr) had ANY fuel come out. I mean BONE dry, which leads me to believe its a fuel issue

And is there anything else important on that harness under the fuel bowl other than the ipr pigtail? Meaning anything else on ther that will keep the truck from starting?

It will be interesting to see what you get for fuel pressure. I have a used pump and regulator you could have if you end up needing them. Not really worth selling them with a 206000 miles on them.

Nope just the IPR. i guess I should have know it was working since you 3000PSI when cranking.
