I have a 95 7.3l powerstroke. It died on me while heading home one day. tried all the usual culprits, noticed reservoir was empty. Tried filling with oil and it emptied on cranking and didn't start. Left sit till I had time, noticed it had been unregistered for 7 years, yes I'm an old fart and time flys. I went through a lot to get it running, most probably not original problem, just from sitting too long. I had pulled the motor to pull pan and frt cover to check for broken pickup tube, lowpop, and antidrainback valve or pop off valve. new ipr, ebpsensor, icp sensor, fuel pump, and pcm. I believe the aftermarket ipr is what burned out my pcm. As said many time only go with oem parts when possible, I was told they were no longer available, but they are. Anyway back to reason for post. I've had the truck running since July2024, have made a 18 hour trip with it and driven it on a simi-regular basis. I've had shoulder surgery and the only auto vehicle I have is a 96 chrysler concord I use to drive to my job. Soo pickup has been sitting for approximately 8 weeks. We have had a snow storm and I wanted to use the pickup as it is 4x4, and car, just when I need it, is giving me heating problems. Soo, Pickup wouldn't start. (when it rains it pours, or in this case...when it snows it accumulates haha). Still can only work with left hand and I am definitely not left handed, so checked with scanner, rpm showed good, but no injector control pressure, pushed Schrader valve and had good fuel flow, got frustrated and tired so went in house. Thought about it last night , so went out and cranked it this morning and oil pressure gauge didn't move, no pressure. Twisted off 1/4" adapter trying to remove reservoir plug so just pulled oil pressure sensor. reservoir empty. Used funnel and filled reservoir, pickup started and has been running ever sense. Oh, It has been starting in the morning running for a second or two then dying and having to crank for awhile to restart then running ok. I believe I have a bad injector, but by the time I get the oil hot enough to run test, it is running on all injectors. Soooo, now for the question I made this short post for. (yes that was dripping with sarcasm.) What would let my hpop reservoir drain off overnight. Again not completely. I am experienced with these motors, but retired for several years, so anyone have an idea of what I'm forgetting?

Only thing I can think of for draining when sitting would be the "short circuit valve" leaking. See the attached. Cheers!

Thanks Patrick. That is the check valve/pop off valve I was referring to. It is the only thing I could think of also. I know a bad ipc valve stuck open will let it drain and keep it from filling also, but is a new factory ipc valve. I've had the check valve out and cleaned it, even though it didn't show any contamination. The ball looked good and so did the seat. one other thought was if the bad injector had anything to do with it. If the seals of the injector were letting the oil galleys to the injectors leak off and as soon as I crank it it uses up the oil in the hpop before it can refill. But yesterday and this morning it didn't want to refill, and I had to add oil to it. Which makes me think the injector doesn't have anything to do with that problem. Thanks again for the input. For now I killed it, let it sit through lunch, then started it and drove out to check farm animals. Figured out driving a stick with just my left hand isn't so bad. I had just rebuilt the zf5 when I was getting it running since after sitting I had to tear it down to reseal it anyhow. So it shifts quite smoothly.
