I swapped from a 273 to a 271 almost two years ago, bought the pigtail and still haven't hooked up the light. From memory the 271 has a two conductor output. Its open for 2wd with a ground for 4x4 and a ground for low. Just put it in 4x4, use a multimeter set to ohm, connect one side to ground and touch each of the two wires on the pigtail. The one that is closed is 4x4, the open one is low.

Looking at the diagram for the 273 there is a light blue wire for 4x4 and a light blue/black for low. However it is connected to the GEM and not directly to the transfer case range indicator. My plan for whenever I get around to it is to clip those two wires behind the cluster and run them to the transfer case similar to how the factory would have done it.
