I am currently in the process of installing new radiator, upgrading from stage 1 to stage 2 injectors and whole lot of other work. My oil cooler does not have any leaks at the current time, is there any benefit to removing the cooler and cleaning out the coolant passages. Did not know if they have a tendency to plug up over time or not.

If its not leaking I wouldn't mess with it.

I didnt drain the oil, just the coolant.
I found getting the bolts lined up with gaskets a major PITA
a second set of hands would make it a breeze.
I also undid a motor mount and jacked the engine a bit for reinstall
maybe doing it from the wheel well would make it easier
the mess was embarrassing :)

I would recommend draining the oil, when you remove the cooler coolant can leak down the throat of the oil gallery and will end up in the oil pan. When I did my 96 a few years back I didn't drain the coolant at the rear block plugs and a lot of coolant ended up in the oil pan.

The front block to cooler gasket I slid in from the underside once the cooler was located and a bolts on the rear where in place. As noted above I used a nylon strap (webbing belt) to hold the cooler together on install this secured the heads from moving around too.
