In my morning stupor, I accidently filled my truck up with off-road diesel:fustrate:. It had a 1/4 tank when I filled it. Will it hurt anything to run it in my truck (with the exception of my wallet if the DOT caught me) or should I drain the gas tank?

You'll be fine to run that tank but I would avoid doing it again. I'm pretty sure the offroad has a red dye in in it that stains your fuel tank and system so the DOT can check.

I hope I don't do that again!!! I wouldn't have even knew I did it if it weren't for the fact the pump didn't stop and a little diesel spilled.....it was a red so I was thinkin WTF....then I looked closer and figured it out. This gas station has a place for trucks to pull into and they have 5 pumps in a line. It turns out the middle one is for off road diesel.

If that's the worst thing that happens to you this week I would say you're doing good.

Thanks guys. I knew on the older injections systems it wouldn't hurt anything (well I knew people who ran it and never had a problem) but I wasn't sure on the newer ones if it would be a problem.

Problem is, your tank, lines, etc, will be stained for a loooong time. It'll show red for probably 10-20 more tanks

Go buy a locking fuel cap now.... That way you don't get your tank dipped while you are in a parking lot.

After about 5 tanks, most of the dye will be gone, but you will still have a redish tint for some time.... I wouldn't worry though.

Just be glad you don't have a Donaldson filter in plain view. Took two tanks to get the fuel in it not to look reddish

No way.

Wrong. Doesn't stain anything. Just a red dye for visual.

Run the next couple tanks of fuel down as low as you feel comfortable (the lower the better) and then fill up with on road fuel. By then you'll never even know it had dyed fuel in it. There is no difference between off road and on road fuel one just gets red dye and the other doesn't. Some of the on road fuel is clear like water and some is more yellow/green in color depending on what brand it is. Try using the yellow/green if you can as it will dillute the dyed fuel better/quicker than the clear. BTW I'm not claiming to be an expert but I've been in the fuel business for around 30 years so I do know what I'm talking about. Hope this helps.

What's the difference and why to they dye it? I thought one was a low sulphur (off road) and one was an ultra low sulphur (on road)? I was always under the impression that offroad higher sulphur fuel would trash a newer hpfp or be hard on CR injectors? Idk lol

That's good to know since I drive "professional" part time. I just had to go through a level II safety inspection last week at a weigh station with no violations so hopefully I won't have to go through another for a while.

Like others have said it wont hurt a thing, i run it in my truck. And all our diesels it wont die/stain anything.
Almost all the onroad semis i work on run offroad which is alot more risky as they get dipped alot more than just a truck.
Whenever ive seen trucks get dipped the DOT used a clear tube so it wouldnt even get down into our tanks on a pickup, not sure if theyre all the same but just the ones ive seen.
