The ring is the dust seal, they are known to come off. Wont really matter unless you are driving where it is fully submerged in water.

Popping with the lift....Id check the trac bar first and make sure its torqued to spec. Usually its not bc the spec is so high, 400 ft lbs iirc on the drivers side.

Ball joints - check them and find out. Jack it up, put jack stands under the axle and rest the truck on the stands. Grab the tire. You are looking for side to side or up and down movement.

I know my sway bars need new bushing and make a clunky sound when I hit bumps.

Mine does the same from the same wheel. New sway bar bushings, ball joints all check out, no wheel play, tie rod ends tight, new trac bar with poly bushings all still at torque spec. I've gave up on trying to track it down, since everything is safe and working.

Mine does the same thing. I wonder if it could be the ball joint on the trac bar needing grease.

Hmmmm could be. Does it sound and feel like a pop? Like something is shifting or hitting the underside of your truck?

It's seems or feels kinda like the axle would be just barely bottoming out. So yes kind of a pop. But I don't feel anything shifting.

After looking at mine just now it looks like the sound may be the shock hitting the bracket from the bushing flexing.

popping noise could be anywhere there is a bushing or joint. also could be loose bolts on fender or firewall... all have been known spots to cause the popping noise.
