I'm thinking about doing a super duty turbo swap on my truck this summer. I have all the parts needed to do it but i have some questions as to how to go about it. Do i need to use the sd manifolds or can i get away with using my obs ones? And will the turbo fit or will i have to do some fire wall mods?

I want to do that when i go really big with my motor. But for now to save money ill just swap it.
thats cool then... do you plan on going bigger at one point or just want a hair bigger turbo?

I want to do stage 1s and a little bigger turbo for a couple years while im in school. Then i'm going to go really big later.

why not just throw a d66 on it with the stage ones? then add a intercooler.... the d66 is very competitive with a 38r.. and the d66 is a drop in turbo for you... then later when you go big you could spent the extra money on a different mount. unless all the sd parts you have you got already or for free!!

stock turbo to stock turbo only thing a sd turbo will do is make your truck run hot unless its a van turbo with the big exhaust housing on it till you get a 38r like you want...

sorry, smokedout250 beet me...

I think i will just do the d66 for now. I have an ic waiting to go in but it needs to be flushed out. Anyone know of a good shop who can do that in the chicago land area?

also the d66 is good to around 500hp...

the inner-cooler......just tip it up on its side so all the oil can run out of it for a while or fill it full of gasoline, slosh it around real good, dump it out, spray a few cans of break cleaner in it, slosh it around, dump it out, then hook the air hose or shop vac up to it and blow it out for a while so it dries it out completely, then install it... unless it was on a truck that the turbo spit parts into it then i wouldn't even use it...

If you have all the parts or most of them for the SD swap, then why not to it. From someone that has actually done it on 2 different pickups now, it's not that bad. Both truck I did it on just because I had everything I needed to do the swap already. If you're wanting something interum till you go big, then just run a SD turbo for a while, then find the right deal on a 38R, then go big.

To swap, you need the only the driver's side SD exhaust manifold. The pass side is the same. 3" plenums, SD up-pipes, ped, etc etc. If you already have to turbo and it's a stock SD truck turbo, then you'll need to mod the flange on your downpipe by welding on a SD flange. If you have or can get a 1.15 housing for that SD turbo, then use your OBS EBPV/dp flange. The 3" OBS downpipe will have to be dimpled a little along with the pass side up-pipe in order to clear each other.

You'll also have to massage the firewall a good deal behind the turbo and above it to clear the SD turbo since it sits taller than the stock OBS.

I don't think it's a bad thing to do and it gives you good practice in being up on top of the motor. Or go the easy D66 route for now. Either way, I don't think you can go wrong. If you wanna swap to SD stuff just do it and don't let anyone talk you out of it. I did it for kicks cause I had everything I needed already. Everyone told me not to, but I'm glad I did and would do it again as an interum step. I don't honestly think I'd ever go back to a stock OBS turbo setup ever again!! Within the next year, I'm going to be pulling my stuff off and going to a T4i flange GQSSB or KASB.

Thanks for the input man. Did you leave the waste gate on the sd turbo? How did it sound? I do have all the parts to swap it, just have to rebuild the stock sd turbo though and get a different exhaust housing for it. I do plan on getting the T4 mount one day but for now its out of the question. How much does the fire wall need to be modded? Do you have any pics?

I used a SD van turbo on both trucks. The only diff between the van and truck turbo is the exhaust housing is a 1.15 non-wg on the van. So no wastegated for me. If you have to get a diff exhaust housing anyway for it, then I'd find a 1.15 and then you don't have to worry about the wg. Problem is they're harder to find than a stock truck .84 housing. If you did install it with the wg'd housing, you'd need to clearance the firewall a touch more I'd imagine. And get a Turbomaster or whatever the brand is that DieselSite sells that isn't actuated off of boost. It's mechanical.

I'll see if I have any good pics that show the firewall clearancing. If not, I'll go take some pics it. I 4lb mini sledge in just the right spots for massaging is all I did.
