Good Question,

I would imagine you could unplug the cluster to test that theory? I honestly don't know.

Disclaimer: I have not found out for myself.

However, I thought the only thing needed from the dash on a 7.3 was a bulb or resistor in place of the battery "idiot light" on the dash. I believe it is part of the line that completes the signal from the PCM to tell the alternator to charge.

The bulb circuit provides the voltage to excite the field windings. The alternator will not charge without that, since unlike an old-style generator, they are not self-exciting. Cheers!
