The tall oil filter cap is for some aftermarket oil filters. The OEM filter is shorter and if used in combination with that cap it doesn't filter properly. The OEM filter cap is a much lower profile, it resembles the fuel filter cap, once you know what you are looking for it sticks out like a sore thumb.

Not sure about that, I've only ever run OEM filters in mine so I've never really paid the aftermarket filters any attention. As a group, they generally are not thought well of and a Motorcraft is too easy to find on store shelves. But if you buy a truck used and plan to use stock filters, you definitely need to watch out for that cap and make sure it is stock.

It's a pretty obvious difference in cap height. With most of those aftermarket ones, the filter is actually glued into the cap, where the OEM filter snaps into a OEM cap. There used to be a sticky here about using the wrong caps/filters...not sure if it's still on the site or not.

I know the sticky you're talking about, I used to use wix filters and the cap is a lot taller than the OEM one but after reading that thread I went back to motorcraft. just in case anyone is curious, rockauto.com has the cheapest price for motorcraft 6.0/6.4 oil and fuel filters that I've found...

Cheaper than here?

Diesel-filters.com

That's the best price I ever found. I used to buy several at a time from dieselfiltersonline.com until I got clued into them. It's even cheaper to forgo the Motorcraft branded ones and buy the white box Racor filters. Saves $4.10 per filter, $12.05 for the plain box Racor versus $16.25 for the Motorcraft.
