I did a little searching here but didnt find what I was looking for.

Im new to the 6.4, I have 3- 7.3's in 0 deg. weather they I start em up run a few min they drive, I get heat in about 5 miles. My 08 goes on high idle for 25 min then I drive about 15 miles ( all the way to work ) before I get any heat. Is this normal??? I checked coolant level 3-4 times not its full & never changes.

mine does the same thing, its normal for these trucks. Someone explained it over on PSN. there was a thread with diagrams about why these motors do that.

So I just did a cold start up high idle for 10 min then drove 12 miles to work & SCT showed EOT at only 68.75 degrees & ECT at 121 deg. Looks like Im going to get a supplemental heater just for the short drive to work :(

I think you might have a problem with your thermostats being stuck open.
I'm up to about 180 degrees ECT in about 10 miles.

Are you using the grille cover?

What kind of ambient temps and driving speeds are we talking here? Also, your EOT and ECT should be a lot closer...

With a 10min high idle and driving the 15 or so miles to work I can be at full temps even in mild negative degree weather without my winter front. With the winter front I can do it in -40. But once I get off the expressway and have to do stop signs, traffic lights and low engine loads it'll cool back down to the 140's or so EOT/ECT.

It was in the mid 20's last night when I posted this, the EOT only gets to 90 & the ECT 123 at the most. Im going to check the thermostat tonight.

ok, hopefully that's the issue and it's an easy fix.

This morning I paid attention to my temps for you:

Cranked with ~40* EOT/ECT (block heater and oil pan heater). 10min high-idle (1600rpm) to ~130*EOT/ECT. Drove 2-3miles to the transfer site and had ~150* EOT/ECT. Neither got more than 5* different than the other.

That was in negative mid 20's ambient, top speed 45mph, winter front on.

WOW, ok yea I got something going on for sure then. Ill start at the thermostat & go from there.

Why do you think the EOT has never gone over 90?? even after an hour drive this afternoon it was 43 outside & only got to 87.55. is that to low for EOT??

Not normal, you have a bad thermostat.

Mine where bad and I could drive for hours and barely get it to 140-150 on a cold day. After replacing them it gets up to temp with in 5 miles of the house.
