The navigation in my 08 quit working, some quick questions

The navigation in my 08 lariat quit working the other day, It started making a weird noise and said it couldn't read the disk so I took the disk out and its still making noise trying to read it but stops after a few seconds so no nav anymore. Can I put a 09 or newer unit in there? Is it a big job? Has anyone ever done it? Any good after market units that would be cheaper? Thanks guys......
