I use 4 positions on mine.

Heavy Tow: I like the shift setup and I can put anyone in the drivers seat and not worry about them hurting anything.

High Idle: Cause it gets so frickin cold in Texas. lol

DD: shifting is not as aggressive as the next one. Shifts into OD a little earlier than the others.

Race: Good Powah. Stay's in 3rd till 55mph. TC lockup is good.

I dont think one tune could satisfy me. I just don't feel comfortable hooking up to 18K lbs in my race tune. I'm pretty sure EGT's would be too high. Haven't tried though.

High idle is also nice for cooler AC and cooling down egts after a hard run.

I am also reasonably certain any tuner can get a single tune chip from TS.

Also, Charles runs a single tune, but has hours of tuning in that tune. For his truck and only his truck. Someone with an identical set up could get that tune and hate it.

There is no way a single tune is going to to do everything right with no trade offs.

All you have to have is the chip, you don't need the switch. Whats the issue?

We have a winner. Just burn a single tune to the chip and install it. No switch and cable needed. We sell a lot of chips that way, especially for commercial vehicles that have multiple drivers.

True, I was just throwing it out at his expence. :D

In all seriousness, while maximizing 1 tune would be the cats azz most of us (read me) don't have the "how-to" to even know where to begin.

How does that work Tony? Do you burn in pos 1 & leave the rest empty & not use the switch or burn all 6 as the same? I know when Matt reburnt mine we put the same tune on all 6 & left the switch in. I've had chips before with 4pos burned on instead of 6 & they freaked out. If I can take a 4 or 6 pos TS chip & get one program burned on & be reliable it will open more doors for a lot of people with work rigs that just want 1 tune. Save them from buying an edge or Superchips.

Why not just use something like the sct? flip switch or x3

Because SCTs don't work on OBS trucks & aftermarket tuning options are limited on 7.3Ls.

Just remove the switch and burn the chip as a "single position", not "multi position".

Why can't you have a tune that goes into high idle automatically based on coolant temp, can drive daily fine, can run over the mountains, etc - all using the modifier tables for what they were intended to do - modify the fuel and timing based on temperature, atmospheric pressure, etc.... the only reason I think its wise to have two tunes is to have a "valet" tune for when someone else is driving your truck.

I like different shifting strategy in the mountains vs driving in town esp. I like the upshift points a tad higher and the downshift points closer to the upshift points for mountains. I have had tunes that did the auto high idle and liked them. I do think I like having more control over that myself a little better though. I still like having the stock tune for emissions or "valet." I could be OK with one tune for it all if I had to but if given a choice I prefer at least having a few tunes on hand. I had a lot of input getting the shift strategy down to my preferences so that factors in as well I guess.

Lastly some times I like having no start too.

Figured I'd start this thread because I know I'm not the only one that feels that one tune can handle 99% of what we're doing with our trucks. I have a TS 6pos with 1 tune burned on it currently just to fill up the other 5 slots. The pedal is left alone so I can drive it in rain/snow/ice without worrying about getting involved in a wreck from an on/off pedal. At the same time the more I roll into it the more throttle is applied so it drives just like a quick stock like truck.
I really wish we could get modern made single position chips like the old Superchips Gold & the old ATS & Western Diesel single position chips. They plugged into your PCM & if you didn't want em all you had to do was pull it out. I don't know how many people I talk to that have a work truck & want a single daily/eco tune but have no use for a 6pos chip. Before someone says it, yes I know that some tuners offer PCM flashes but I am talking about something on a TS style format so the tuner of your choice can burn it with the tune of your desire.
I know I'm not the only one that feels that 1 tune is "enough" when it's done correctly.

If you can get your hands on a used one, we can still reprogram those old Gold Superchips! In fact, I processed three of them today! :D

EDIT: I would NOT suggest buying this one.

Fair enough on the shifting strategies - never even really gave that a thought. I totally understand a valet position - and can understand a no start position too considering how often these trucks seem to get stolen.

Just wanted to play a little devil's advocate :D

Interesting thread.. I'd have to say out of my 6 I only often use 2-3 tunes... one of the 'hot' ones(i have 2) and a tow tune.. And I have the PHP FU so I have the burner and access to alot more tunes I just havent messed around with it much, dont know why, pretty busy though..

Pffftt.....I have 16 different tow tunes....all of which were "live tuned"!!!

J/K, you guys guys know what I have. And Cat, an emulator is the perfect 1 position chip! My truck has not seen a chip in many years.

Burning the same program 6 times?! Or just do what several already mentioned. If you want 6 positions put your valet in position 1 and unhook the cable when someone drives your truck. . .

Also if you take the nut and lock washer off of the switch there is another washer under there that determines how many positions the knob is. Have the knob all the way counter clockwise and move the tabbed washer to the numbered hole that represents the number of positions you want. The chip only supports 6 though so when you go past that it just sets it back to the first setting like the cable is unplugged.

Anyone remember when the old 6 pos chips would get stuck in the 1st pos when you got a voltage drop?
