trans cooler

I'm buying a bts off a member and im wonder whats the best way to clean out my trans coolers. The trans i have in there now is smoked and i know the coolers are filled with crap. i dont want to just scrap them because i have a 6.0 cooler already and there kinda of expensive to buy a new one. Another questions is should i just bypass the rad trans cooler?

You should NOT bypass the radiator cooler. It does a very good job of cooling the ATF. I do not know of an effective way to clean out a 6.0L cooler. I would not reuse one of those after a trans failure.

what should i try to do to clean out the radiator cooler? It will be out of the truck anyway. I have to pull the motor and fix the oil pan.

The radiator cooler is just a tube. Blow solvent through it in both directions several times.

You could put a filter inline on the return side.

Thanks for the replies. I think thats what I'll do and just put a filer in and change it a few times. Would brake clean work well to clean it out? Also what kinda of filter? Would just an oil filter on a filter block work?

Blow compressed air through it at first them a couple of cans of flush. Do it at the lines where they conect to the trans to clean the whole system. And as Marty said you can put an inliine filter on the return side. There are ones made for this.
