Well I guess it has always been urban legend then that temps over 200F are bad for a tranny. Just going by what I've heard here. Thanks for info on the temps. Now I won't worry when/if my tranny temp gets up in the 200F+ range. I guess since we are discussing temps, how high can the temp go before I have to worry??

Yes it is an urban legend.

You can go to 250°F for up to a half hour at a time with NO problems. 220°F is the max temp for all day long. I've personally ran a trans as high as 320°F for a test and a tear down afterwards showed no damage. I DO NOT recommend you do this, I was a professional! :badidea:

My jeep runs in the 180-220 range in Texas summer stop and go traffic. Once you start staying ABOVE 200 for extended periods of time, change your fluid more often. 20-30k range for me. Higher temps will still break down the fluid faster. Synthetic or not.

The jeep has a 545rfe trans and it has 2 filters. Standard pickup, and spin on return filter. Same as my 4r100 now. Very little to no metal in the pan.

WOW!! That is good to know. Thanks for setting me straight. I'm not going to worry as much now when I'm around the 200F mark.:ford:

great thread. I was always worried about trans temps.

lets veer right a bit,
Mark, at a dyno day recently, this guy was telling me he took the lines that go to the radiator and bypassed them so the trans fluid never got to be touched by it and said his temps dropped 10-15 degrees. truth to this?

he still ran them to the cooler but not the radiator? I have not followed the lines nor have I cared to look as I am doing fine trans wise. just was wondering if he was spreading BS. same guy that said his 7.3 was gonna crush my dyno number. he hit 346ish I think, but a close to two bucks shy of my number. so I take his info with a grain of salt.
