I lost compression on cyl 2 a few weeks ago, finally got it tore down here is what I found. I was just driving about 60 mph and it knocked a few times and started skipping. What caused this? I think the injector hung and maybe bent a rod, Shane seems to think its a bent rod form the pics also. The engine sounded fine except for a skip.

I would say from the crazy gap between the piston and cylinder wall that yes you probably have a bent rod. Probably a lot of scoring on the side where the piston looks damaged or melted. Now to figure out why it bent. Injector is a good assumption?

I have never been in the bottom end of one of these but was thinking it could be a pin also. I would have thought if a injector hung it would crack a piston before it bent a rod, guess I was wrong. It did scar the wall pretty bad, can't feel it a whole lot but looks bad.

Maybe the piston is distorted or something but the wrist pin is at least 1 inch there is no way it bent but maybe a clip came out and worked it's way out? Not sure I would think you would have massive groves from the wrist pin.

Maybe the bottom of the piston is broken where the pin goes thru. Hard to say at this point but def not good

Good news is you cab probably have the block bored to .020 over if needed

yep, sure it will need boring. Isn't boring gonna limit my piston selection? I was told IH pistons only come in standard bore. What about a sleeve, so I can run updated IH pistons. All other bores still have good cross hatch but wont know for sure till every thing is measured.

Yes you won't be able to run the international ones but you can run stock pistons and have them machined like international pistons easy enough

i had a 6.4 hang number 8 injector. never hurt the piston up top. once tore open,it bent the rod, pulled the pin boss into the counter balance on the crank.

pinched the piston in the bore, and busted the cylinder wall.

On Wayne's motor the wrist pin was so worn out the piston moved side to side at least 1/4". How many miles on the motor?

115k
look at the spray pattern, does look like the injector was causing some kind of misfire or incorrect spray pattern. Just from what i can see(my angle).

your right the pattern is all jacked up on that one.

Ding ding ding lol

Sucks man haven't seen that one yet.

I had a piston skirt that was chipped on the bottom... Wonder if that's how it starts?

There was a guy on here that traded his truck in because of aluminum in the oil... I bet this is that engines fate...

The first thing my machine shop said when looming at a set of 6.0 6.4 pistons was wow, there is such little material on the bottom side.

Yep you nailed it on the piston, I never thought a rod would bend side to side like that. All the gassers I ever saw are top to bottom.

That's exactly how dillehays looked

Not sure why they bend like that. Mikes bent on the exhaust side is that how yours are too?

In the las pic look between the ring and the rod to the right, its a open cavity from the bottom you can see the underside of the bowl. No wonder they crack
