That's not my question. Essentially I want a heater that I can leave on overnight without worrying about it damaging things, yet still be effective.

Beats me, if that's your question. You must either live on post or else you haven't gotten your first electric bill yet.

If you're going to leave it plugged in all night I'd just plug the block heater in and the oil pan will soak enough radiant heat out of the block.

You have a good point, that is what we do where I work so that's what I'm used to doing.
