Hey guys, I think I want to get some better sound to my truck. I have the stock door speakers in my truck and I need something better. The stock head unit will be pushing them for now. I dont have the upgraded speaker system the trucks come with the 8" sub in the back and high's in the doors so I need some better sound. What are a good set to replace my factorys with?

What has better sound quality? Round vs Oval

Round!

Oval is usually only used by the OEM manufacturer's, and only reason there are aftermarket ovals, is for people who are too lazy to switch to rounds. The reason OEM's use ovals is because it is a trade off in sound quality versus output. Output is essentially Power X cone area, so if you can squeeze in a little more cone area by making an oval shape, you can get a little more potential output for the same amount of power.

What it comes down to is sonic physics, an oval speaker cone has a surround that is not symmetrical, this causes uneven travel as the cone moves in/out and uneven sound wave generation.

I have 6.75" mids in my truck and they fit with zero metal cutting due to the shape of the basket. I only had to drill 4 new holes for the screws. You should be able to get a 6.5" speaker in the same factor hole without any trouble, or even some 6.75" speakers, at the very worst you will have to widen the factor opening a touch, just in the center of the opening.

For me personally, if you are only going to stick to head unit power, especially the stock head unit, I would limit my budget to around $1-150 per speaker set if not less. The stock head units put out somewhere from 7-10w RMS (I believe) and an aftermarket unit will average 17-20w RMS (they will all advertise 50x4 peak, but RMS is all that matters.) Due to these power levels I think you will easily see diminishing returns in speakers on the higher end of things. If anything take whatever savings you get on the cheaper speakers to drop in a decent 50 or 75 by 4 amplifier off the factory HU.

Also due to the lower power levels the key spec on the speakers you should be looking for will be Sensitivity. The higher the number the better, it is basically a measurement of how loud the speaker can get per wattage.

All things considered being stock HU power, I wouldn't be too terrible concerned with the sound quality difference between round/oval, and you might benefit better from an oval such as those Infinties you linked. Also Infinity usually has a higher sensitivity.

The only thing is I'd like to keep it under 175 atleast. I know itll be good enough from me. I listen to country and dont play it for all the people inside eating supper to hear when I go by.

Would I be better to by a set of two like these focals for $170 and install in my front or rear doors and keep the factory set in the other two doors or would I be better to buy the 4 Polk speakers for $150.

you still have the plastic piece that is by the window right? just put a tweeter in it, hot glue works well, or if you dont just put it high in the door plastic try to have them aim towards you, size depends on what your looking for if your going to run subs either will work if no subs the bigger size will give you a little more thump.

Pro60's are definitely a great set of speakers, but I wouldn't spend the money on them unless they will be getting amped at some point. I just see it as spending a good chunk of change on some huge injectors but without a fuel system or turbo or any supporting mods.

buy just the front then save and do the back and amp, honestly i would keep your tweeters away from your drivers it always sounds better becuase the sound wave from the driver wont distort your tweeter(clearer) here is a good set for 190 http://www.crutchfield.com/p_107DB5251/Polk-Audio-db5251.html?tp=106 btw there are many places way cheaper then crutchfeild

One thing I would add is as you separate the tweeters from the drivers you just want to remember to try and keep the path lengths as equal as you can otherwise you will start getting audible timing separation of the highs and lows. If you can't adjust for time alignment in the HU or processor or take care of it through phasing then there should be some careful consideration of where the tweeters get mounted. Just a tape measure to get path lengths, or use some double sided tape or hot glue and play around with various mounting locations for the tweeters and give them a good listen in each place.

I would say 6.5's, in my opinion bigger is better, if I had the time right now I would be hacking up my doors to install some 8's but for now the 6.5's will have to do. Remember cone area is directly related to overall output, and also to low end response/authority. A larger cone will play lower frequencies easier, think a diesel vs a gas in getting a load moving.

As for mounting the tweeters, it would probably be the easiest to just grab some factory sail panels from a truck with the higher end stereo. They come with tweeters mounted in the pods, so you can just remove the factory tweeter and mount yours behind the pod and have a factory look. Or you could build your own without much trouble and with that get a little bit of aiming built in too.

This is what I built years back, its pretty simple

Again I would worry about time alignment, but if you test it out in that spot and you can't pick up any separation with your ear, then go for it.

For 6.5's I honestly don't think you would have to trim anything. Worst case though, you might have to remove about 1/8" to a 1/4" of material on 2 sides of the factor openings in the door. OR... you could get some 1/2" MDF or HDPE (cutting boards) and make some adapter rings, these will also space the speaker out from the door a 1/2" which should make it fit without any problems.

the factory openings are 6"x8" (nominal) and the cutout diameter of these 6.5" example speakers is 4-15/16" which should fit without any modifications. I am thinking back, and I believe the opening at the narrowest is 5.5" across.
