I wish those heads were closer to me....I'm about 7hrs from Knoxville.

Guy got back with me with a block casting. It's a 71 block (D1OE). Waiting to hear back about the heads. If they are a C or D code, I'll probably just go pick up the whole longblock. Come with a C4 as well that needs rebuilding, and only asking $500 for the whole shebang. Could be bought for $400 I think

Let me know if you want the heads I'm heading to Knoxville this weekend, and I am always down for a road trip.

Roger that. Thanks for the offer. Let's see what this guy comes up with on these heads this evening. He's only about 10 miles from me.

Well, got the engine out and mostly broken down. When I pulled the plug on the oil pan, 3qts of water came out, and I knew I was in trouble. Cylinder that dropped the valve has a crack down it. Yay. Had an inch of sludge in the bottom of the pan. Does have 30 over pistons in it though, so it has been bored before. Cam retainer plate was finger tight, if even that, and upside down. Rod bearing on that cylinder looked rough. Guess I need to go look.at this 71 longblock that's local to me and just start fresh.

Sure seems that way huh. There's a damn pine needle on the oil pickup screen! I think he was just an idiot and honestly had no clue.

FYI If you end up with heads that are older than about 74-75, you might want to research hardened valve seats. I had D0VE heads and they needed seats put on. Hell, it may be worth going the other direction to an injected motor.....

Good luck on the project.

71 long block= a non smog motor so is factory better than what you have.
That sux that your having to essentially rebuild it. But then again, YOU KNOW whats in it and how it went together.

I'm just leery of another used motor. Talk to the guy a bit tonight about the local one. He said he got it from a buddy a year ago. Was in his mustang and was loosing coolant, so he just assumed head gasket and put a new engine in. Said they found upon removal a freezeplug had a pin hole and that's where the leak was. He kept the engine, but has since sold the truck he planned on using it in, so no longer needs it. No idea of mileage, no idea if it's ever been rebuilt. He "said" there was no coolant in the oil when they pulled it. I really don't want to end up with another boat anchor to go along with the one I have now. He's asking $500 for it and a C4 together. No intake, manifolds, valve covers/flywheel. I think $500 is high not knowing anything about it.

True, w/o a flexplate, intake or valve covers is essentially a boat anchor.

Well I'm getting an aluminum intake anyways, and can just swap the other missing pieces off my current engine. So I'm not really worried about the missing accessories.

Sounds pretty high. I saw one yesterday that was being sold at 150. The guy said it ran but that was 2nd hand info from his friend, so he was selling it at core price.

Ok, new option...

What about a swap to a 351W? Best I can find, about the only thing I'll need to change is the distributor, possibly alter my accessory brackets, and alter the exhaust (but if I do headers, I'd have to change it anyways. The extra cubes would be fun, and I'm sort of partial to the 351W. Reason I ask, there's one local...

Don't the 302 and 351w use the same bellhousing pattern on a C4?

Suuuure, that'll drop right in. Stock C4 will definitely handle that. That thing costs what....6 figures?
