What injector to match a 6.7

Curious on injectors as I've been out of the performance for awhile. I have a 95 obs that is getting worked over and I'm picking up parts piece by piece of what I want as a end product. Anyways what injector would it take to make the 7.3 match the 6.7, and I'm not talking peak power but actually working the the truck in its designed range of rpm.

Been wondering if a stage 1 injector would do it or jump up to a hybrid on a tow tune? I only want a do it all tune, so if it can't tow or it smokes or builds too much heat it's out of the question.

Not to be rude but you might as well just buy a 6.7. In order to make a 7.3 tow like 6.7 and be reliable will break the bank.......

What's a stock 6.7 put down for power, 320-350rwhp. I don't see that being to big of a deal as the trans being a 3+Od vs 6 speed

an 11-14 will dyno around 350 and a 15-17 closer to 400 to the rear wheels.

In order for your 7.3 to tow like a 11-14 it will require a 250/100 or 250/80 hybrid, T4 setup, built trans, live tuning, etc....

To tow like a 15+ it will require even more....

And once you get to that point you will be battling EGT and smoke output, noise, etc...

I would not compare your 7.3 to a 6.7 unless you want to be very disappointed

Agreed, newer trucks are just so much better and refined. However, the 96 that I sold last year was a beast at towing, egt's were not a problem, and power was always on tap, I would have not traded up if I didn't need a 4 door and automatic. It had 175/100s, BASB T4 turbo, T500 hpop, intercooler, push rods, shimed 910 valve springs, and of course live tuned. I absolutely loved towing with that truck, oh and was smoke free if you knew how to tow with a 5spd

I understand that they are apples and oranges but just curious. Derek I won't be disappointed as I know the difference in tech has evolved with the newer trucks but can't stomach the price. Just curious what it would take. Also what are you figuring for drivetrain loss with your numbers?

you can easily match the hp of a 6.7L, but you will NOT be able to run at a similar SUSTAINED power level due to HEAT

period.

go count how many coolers for anything with a fluid are on any of the new trucks...and note that they're barely make high 300s to the tires.

for you to even make high three hundos to the tires with half ass reliabilityis going to require electric fuel, something better than a bolt on turbo, intercooler, plus injectors & tuning.

It's just super easy to make a similar PEAK power number...but remember...if you "want to tow like a 6.7"...then you need to figure the eff out how you're going to keep everything in/on/around the engine and everything REAR of the engine cool AT A SUSTAINED similar power level.

take a step back, toss in a set of Stage1's and a chip...go around at (literally) DOUBLE the rear wheel power you have now...and enjoy.

https://swampsdiesel.com/products/340hp-package-3/

or you can chase that extra 50hp to match a 6.7L and drop another 5-10g on it, depending on how reliable you want it to be.

Building a 7.3 can actually be cheaper if your carefully about parts selection and look for good deals and IF your doing the wrench work. You still will not match the refined power like a 6.7 has.

I have a 7.3 with a new sxe366, 230/80's, gh tunes, ported heads, gh stage 1 cam and a billet jw trans...tows like a mofo and egt's stay way cool. Setup absolutely crushes my old 38r with 250100's everywhere. I wish I wouldn't of waited so long to change it! Imy just sharing because a good all around quick fun to drive but still tow great was what I've always been after and now I have it.

Pis. Went from unlimited to the pis. Way quieter, idles smoother, and less smoke even before I made the swap to the sxe. If anyone thinks a 38r is even a close turbo to an sxe they are fooling themselves. It spools way earlier than the 38r and is way cooler all the way up. I also tried nearly every aftermarket 38r compressor wheel on the market as well as different exaust housings and matt whipped up a ton of different tunes trying to cut the smoke/heat to get it to spool sooner. The sxe366 was like getting a whole new truck!

Thanks for the info! Not too many negative posts about PIS. How cold has it been where you are at? Interested to hear how it does on cold mornings before it warms up (hazing).

Wisconsin. It only hazes when it's warming up. As soon as it's up to temp it doesn't haze at all. It did all the time with the unlimited 250/100...very frustrating

Try to get a startup video with those PIS injectors this winter. Would love to see how bad it's hazing in a place like that.

I have both....a OBS 7.3 and 6.7.

The build up for the 7.3 is in the sig. The 6.7 is all stock.

My observations from yearly trip from NJ to KY that I've done. Towing my goosneck trailer (over 21k).

The 7.3 has the power to do it but can't beat the refine of the 6.7 to the 7.3. I set the cruise at 70. The 7.3 had to downshift to 3rd to pull some hills especially going through the mountains on the PA Turnpike. If I left it in OD, the EGTs would be too high. Same trip with the 6.7, truck not once had to downshift out of 6th.

Plus...at the end of the trip, you were not beaten up.

There is a difference between a OBS 7.3 and a SD 7.3. When I drive my buddies SD 7.3, it's so much smoother than the OBS 7.3. You gotta drive a SD to know what I'm talking about. Even my buddy said the same thing as he has both OBS and SD mason dumps with the 7.3.

As much as I love my OBS 7.3, the 6.7 wins. Don't get me wrong, I still drive and tow with the 7.3 but 6.7 does it better.

I agree .^^^^^^^^

My obs is a fun truck but for long trips the wifes SD is sooooo much nicer to drive. Better in every way.

Mine is a SD with a full sound deadoned cab...even went as far as ordering am carpet with sound barrier built in. My truck was still crazy loud with the old injectors and 38r. With the pis and sxe it's unreal quit in comparison till it gets to 20psi...then it's a nice whistle. Obviously not nearly as quiet as my father in laws 14' but nice for 7.3. Not quite as much insta spool way down low as his but as soon as it touches 1800 it will destroy the 14. I definitely wouldn't discourage you from trying to get similar performance to the 6.7. It will never be quite as refined as the 6.7 like Billy said but it can get wayyyyyy better than most 7.3 setups of 5 years ago

Aren't you the one Matt Robinson had the video of pulling a bobcat uphill years ago?

Not discouraged or arguing the point that the newer truck is nicer in every way, I owned a 03 7.3 that I swapped the coil front end into and it rode nice. The obs will be getting the same axles 4.10's and 35's like it is now. Good conversation going on.
