Well got out of work today and adjusted the gate so I could barely pull it over the tab on the lever for the gate (about 1/2" away from it in the free position with it unhooked). Took it for a drive empty and it came alive, spun the tires in 2nd gear. Makes about 26-27psi at wot before a shift and is nice and cool now with no smoke once it really gets on the charger. The gate must have been cracking open at 13psi before because it would climb good until then and it would fall on its face and get hot. Now it will whip the gauge till it hits peak boost and pulls much harder. Thanks for the info guys

One time a buddy called me and asked for help getting his exhaust collector lined up cause he was swapping turbos and couldnt get it back on. I went and helped him finish the job. He started it, we checked for leaks, cracked a cold beer while it was warming up. he moved the old turbo so he could sit on the bench and it was at that point he realized he put his old turbo back on...

I just have to ask.

As stated, crank that wastegate down as tight as you can get it. I hit about 26psi in a stock tune. 30+ psi in a daily tune.

38R is a good turbo for stock to slightly larger output injectors.

Just throwing a 38R on the truck with no additional fuel will not yield a huge increase. You could throw any turbo on there and without additional fuel, performance isn't really going anywhere.
egts will be cooler though.

Been running 38R for several years now with stock sticks and it was definitely a huge increase in performance and drive ability

So it seems like a good place to ask, if a guy is really cheap (me), and will never really go to far with a 7.3, would a 38r on an obs be worth it? I'm thinking the most injector I'll ever buy is a 250/200. I just won't spend 10-20k on this or any truck in performance mods- I'm too old and have other places I need to spend my money. I'm thinking I can junk yard the exh manifolds, uppipes (even if they need replaced with bellowed later on), collector, turbo mount. then buy a 38r and probably customize a down pipe- I don't see how I could get into a different turbo any cheaper- right or wrong?

that is completely up to you. i absolutely love my 38r but to change all that to go to one, to me, prolly aint worth it. unless you can get everything including turbo dirt cheap.. your stock obs flange is a t4. you could order a 366 and make a bracket to hold the turbo down.. then make a second one and senx it to me so i can make a 2.6 turbo out of a s480 for my dually.. lol

I wish I knew these turbos better, so a s366 will bolt up to the flange but the stock mount won't work, correct?

I plan to swap my obs over to a late 99-03 setup with a 38r whenever I get around to putting a spare motor in it. I think the downpipe is the only item that needs modification, and that's not even bad. TomS has an old write up on it. I believe you just cut a stock flange off of a SD downpipe, and weld it in place of the obs downpipe flange.

I ran 250/100 and a 38r and the setup was great. Very responsive and I ran constant 8.2s in the 1/8th with Gearhead tunes on a pmr motor

By the time you get done swapping over to SD parts, a T4 would've been quicker.

To install the 38R on an OBS, you need to do the following:
- intake plenums (also need to do them on a T4 conversion)
- swap pedestal
- swap up-pipes (should convert to bellows to eliminate donuts)
- possibly swap exhaust manifolds depending on build date
- fabricate downpipe
- need to intercool truck if its not already done unless you fab a spyder

Billy, I'm well aware of what's involved, ive done something similar to an e99 truck, although I realize it's not an identical swap. I can get darn near every part short of bellowed up pipes and the turbo itself either free, or next to free, and the engine will already be out for all the hard stuff (exhaust manifolds if they do need to be swapped, plenums, etc). May not be worth it to some, but it is to me. The 38r will suit all of my needs and then some, ive ran it before, and can't wait to run one again. If I was to go t4, it would be with a turbo worth much more than I want to spend, and still be ball bearing.

Fwiw if you did a 1.15 housing you could use a van flange and not have to modify the DP since van is same diameter v-band as obs

You do not need to add an intercooler to use a 38r on and OBS truck. The 99-03 intake Y from an E350 van can be used.
I pulled 'work-stock' locally for a while with that setup. Governing body decided I could run a 99-03 turbo, but not the intercooler.
Had to spray a good amount of water to keep it cool while towing.

Yep and I fully intend on running that exact setup. Just need to find someone with a 3" van intake y, or at least a part number. You don't still have one do you?

I may still have one kicking around.
If not, wrecking yard is going to be your best bet. Last I check Ford wanted something ridiculous like $1000 for a new one.
