Hardest part is getting the trans in/out from under the truck since you'll normally need 30"+ of clearance to clear the top of the bell housing. One trick I do is to take a thin piece of sheet metal & run 2 bolts through it to keep the converter from sliding out when your rocking it around trying to get it under the truck. It will hold it on the 4th click, if it's not on the 4th click it WILL *** YOUR WORLD UP when you try to bolt it up & *** up your front pump.

Installed that one by myself & had the truck driving in around 2 hours. But I've done a few of em. After the bell housing bolts are in I throw the cross member back in so you can get the jack out of the way & don't have to worry about dropping it.

Well I did some looking combining info from thread and manuals. Not sure I got the order exactly correct so anyone with experience please correct anything you see incorrect. Figure this can at least give a rough guide or starting point for a how to on transmission removal.

* Disconnect batteries.

* Jack up truck. Need at least 30" of clearance to clear the bell housing when it drops and for install do not forget to figure trans jack height into this.

* Remove transfer case skid plate (if applicable)

* Index mark both the front and rear drive shafts. Suspend with wire and remove bolts to disconnect them.

* For manual transfer case remove linkage and electrical connector

* For electronic transfer case remove the two gear motor wired connectors and position out of the way. Disconnect the vent hose

* Remove the cross member check to make sure no wiring harness is attached to the cross member. Remove if found and position out of the way.

* Remove transmission mount 2 bolts

* Place suitable jack under extension housing.

* Remove the 6 transmission to transfer case mounting bolts.

* Separate the two and pull transfer case rearward. Drop and remove.

* Remove Starter

* Remove bell housing / flex plate inspection cover

* Drain fluids. Some older torque converters have drain plugs others do not. Pull drain plug from trans pan if no drain plug drop pan to drain.

* Place transmission jack under transmission and remove jack from extension housing

* Remove the transmission cooler tubes from the bypass valve on the transmission

* Disconnect shift cable

* Disconnect TR sensor connector and the wire loom from the shift cable bracket.

* Disconnect the solenoid body connector

* Disconnect the turbine shaft speed (TSS) sensor and the output shaft speed (OSS) sensor

* Remove entire transmission wiring harness and zip tie out of the way

* Remove the torque converter to flex plate nuts

* Remove the bell housing to engine mounting bolts totaling 6

* Install a thin bar across the face of the bell housing using two bolts to hold it in place. This is to hold the tq converter in place. That or be very careful it does not fall off while proceeding with the next steps.

* Rock transmission side to side to dislodge/separate dowel pins

* Move transmission and jack reward to clear engine.

* Lower on jack and remove from under truck.

Hey come on you know how late it was when I did all that?

I put all that up and the only thing you pick on is pulling the starter LOL

Why I put it on there? Without thinking to much about it I was going off what I could find as far as steps. Most all of them had that on there so I included it.

Actually I just went digging and even my Ford Shop Manual call for its removal right before you start into the flywheel torque converter bolts and bell housing. HaHa all you that did not pull your starters screwed up your trannies HaHaHa LOL

Don't ask me Ford said to do it and I am guessing that is where it came from with all the other bits and pieces I read from posts got it from originally. Argue with Ford about it. LOL

Tarm, you did leave out one important thing. Bring a stockpile of cusswords to aid in the removal and install. I found that cussing at my trans seemed to help it come out a little easier.

LOL

We used a Crafstman ATV jack, with a piece of wood so the ****ty ass stock pan would sit flat, a lot easier than trying to use a regular jack. We then threw a ratchet strap across it to hold the trans firmly onto the jack. We also installed the trans without the T-case, which if i did it again i'd try it with the t-case on as its a beotch to try to lift up and get aligned right.

Overall my whole transmission experience was not a very good one to say the least. :fustrate:

I put my tcase on my chest and basically bench pressed it up into place by myself, i thought that was easier to do than try and balance all that on the jack, first 2 times i took it out using regular car jacks

I'm getting ready to do this tomorrow. I read lots of threads and got a pdf that says to pull the starter but from the feedback here it looks like its not necessary so I will make a mental note of that. I will also be doing the 6.0 cooler, International bellowed up pipes and FRX so I will have to get plenty of thinking fluid:toast: Does anybody know the torq specs for the tranny, transfer case, cross members, etc.?
