Looking to clean up some parts underneath my truck once I put my new lift on. I'm looking for the best and most durable way to paint my parts without doing powder coat. Not sure if it's best to use spray on undercoat or if there is a paint that is just as durable. Let me know what you guys use.

Not POR 15, re ended up stripping and repainting the frame on the red truck last week. POR flaked right off down to bare metal. and befor anyone asks, we did all the proper preperations, and base coats, primers ect. We ended up using a self etching metal primer, and some shots of gloss black....looks great

Odd to hear that. I havent ever heard a complaint about POR15. I really hope I dont run into the same issue with my axles.

it was really odd because I never had a bad thing to say about it. 2 years later, I was washing the red truck, with a garden hose (so not much pressure) just as I always did, I hit a spot right up front on the frame by the tire, I had about a 8"x8" flake of paint fall right off, right down to the bare metal. maybe it was a fluke, idk, but next winter there are some plans for this truck yet again, so hopefully someone has something that will be a permanent coat.....sorry to derail

Undercoating sucks..

Self etching primer if you want to take it bare.

My frame has been clean sense new and I just touch it up with simi-gloss high performance rustoleum but like I stated, never had rust or anything to clean up.

Had a plow guy I know tried that and it rusted the frame into. So where for the water and salt to go.

I had very similar issues with POR15 on bare metal with a self etching primer.... you could peel it off the primer in most spots......... I just assumed I screwed up some prep work.

Anyway - the best stuff I have found is John Deere semi-gloss black. Most of the parts under my Dmax were sprayed with it and it seems to hold up really well and clean really easily. It holds up well as its formulated to hold up on a tractor in a farming environment (not sure how different it is chemically - but a lot of people swear its tougher paint and I'm becoming a believer)

BINGO....I use John Deere blitz black on everything from frames, axles, mufflers, and everything in between. It's a semi gloss and has the perfect amount of gloss to it without looking like things have been spray bombed.

My F550 was nasty when I got it with rust and just a crappy looking frame and such from being a plow truck in it's former life. I used my high pressure, high heat pressure washer and washed the under side real well and once it dried I sprayed the frame, axles, leaf springs with the JD blitz black. A year later, lots a mud, snow, and grime with only getting washed when it rains it still looks decent. If I would of did prep work it would still look like day one. But I was in a hurry to get the truck on the road.

Sweet. John deere sounds like a solid way to go. I just need to find a dealer near me.

Anyone use vht epoxy paint? Not sure how good it is I just saw it at a local parts store.

My shorty was painted with the blitz black. I guess it holds up better underneath than it does on the top. I wasnt too impressed.

I've heard good stuff about the Deere paint as well, and considering using it on my truck. But since it has a Deere logo on it, i'm sure they'll want quite a few vital body parts for it. LOL
