I appreciate the offers! If I need any help I'll let you guys know!
I got home at 3am this morning from Montana, and when I got home today after work we unloaded the truck and I started to get it ready to pull the engine. I haven't decided if I want to pull the hood to make it easier to get it out with the skid steer or leave it on and try to use the cherry picker. It looks like I won't even have to pull the turbo to get the engine out, there's so much more room under the hood than I'm used to lol.
Here's some progress pics, and a pic of a cracked piston, I don't know if it's the only one right now.

I decided to pull the turbo to try to make things easier to get the engine out tomorrow. I never realized how hard it would be, that was a huge pain in the ass! Idk if I could have got it out I'd the passenger side head wasn't off.

Making progress today, my sisters boyfriend came over today to help me out. We're still waiting on my dad to get back with the welder, we had one torque converter nut that rounded off and we're going to have to weld a socket on it. That's literally the only thing holding us up right now, we're going to have this engine on the ground tonight, no matter what lol. Tomorrow I'm going to build an engine stand, from what I hear the store bought ones don't handle the weight well and I don't want to ruin ours. I'm getting anxious to get the engine torn down to see what the drivers side pistons look like, we're already leaning towards boring .020 over but we'll see what the machine shop thinks.

The drivers side pistons all looked good, I noticed some star shaped patterns that indicated some high timing. After talking to my dad about it he said my uncle did have a chip in it, which probably lead to the piston failure.

Hopefully I'll get it to a machine shop sometime next week and I'll know more on machining, ect.

I've been dragging my feet on this lately, I couldn't decide if I wanted to deal with a machine shop and how I wanted to go about rebuilding the engine. I've looked around for a short block and even bare blocks but haven't really found what I'm looking for.

My dad talked to his buddy earlier today and he has a 97 f-250, it was parked because they got tired of fighting a hard start issue, he said if I buy the engine he will help me pull it. I can probably get it for about $750 which I feel is a pretty good deal, especially if I can get the hard start issue fixed easily, he suspects it's a fuel issue. I plan on taking some batteries over there today or tomorrow to try to hear it run, then I'll know for sure whether I'm going to buy it or not.
I really hope to have this truck on the road soon, I need to park my 04 and address some front axle noises, it's getting worse the more I drive it. I don't know how realistic it is, but depending on how this engine deal goes I might be driving it to Ennis in October.(fingers crossed) :ford:

I finally got time to go look at that other engine, we were unable to get it to start even with starting fluid. Unfortunately I'm about to be in a bind truck wise since I just smoked another tranny in the 6.0  So I'm going to take a gamble and get this engine, the guy isn't going to make me pay until we get it running in my truck which is good, he's a good friend of my dads. I figure if it lasts even a couple months I'll be ok. The odometer was very hard to read, it looked to be about 145k, I could be way off since it was so faded. I'm getting very frustrated with these damn trucks!
