Looks I’m going to change out a water pump again. I’ve always used oem Motorcraft pumps, but they seem to only last 2-3 years. I’ve never had an impeller break, just leaks from the bearing. Are the bpd pumps that much better?

No. I actually had issues with a kdd long block and had to get studs again and went to Powerstroke products head too. I did have issues with fan clutches a while back and swapped a few. It may have been something to do with constantly swapping the clutch’s and breaking the clutch loose. Not sure. Haven’t had an issue since I installed a new Motorcraft clutch.

I looked back in my service records and I actually replaced it in May of 2021. I guess 4 years isn’t too bad after all.

Was that water pump purchased from a dealership?

In all the forums that I am on, I do not see many issues w/ OEM water pumps.

That said, there is no doubt that Ford is wanting to cut some costs on parts for the (old/outdated) 6.0L platform. We have seen quality slipping on numerous parts (HPOPs, Standpipes, oil coolers to name a few).

I hate to be this way, but it just seems like there is a lot of cost cutting going on at all levels. Getting parts from these parts suppliers is probably fine in many cases, but then there are probably some that aren't actually supplying true OEM parts.

I talk to two local dealership parts managers and they tell me that even at their dealerships they have to be very careful, because sometimes (rarely, but it happens) a bad employee will get hired and then original parts will be removed from OEM boxes and replaced with aftermarket. hard to catch. I can imagine parts suppliers get tempted in this way also.

Not saying that that is what happened, just that it is worth some caution buying parts.

I was given a BPD water pump as a trial when they first came out. The deal was that I write up a review on it and put that review on several forums. My original water pump was still good, but I swapped it out for the trial. The BPD water pump worked very well for 7 years or so, but it eventually began to leak like you described on yours. I installed another one because I have been happy with their product.

Motorcraft name has definitely suffered from covid. Just as every single industry has. DOA parts or parts that last a few weeks... It's happening everywhere and to everything.

I've had several motor craft starters DOA
