I just picked up my first diesel ever in my 2000 excursion rwd. I'm no stranger to power but spent a lot of time working in the LS field. My truck is totally stock and has around 200k on it. So far I've done preventative maintenance: oil and filter change, fuel filter change, diff fluid, etc. This is my DD firing the winter but as its started getting cold here, it's not running right.

At maybe 20-30% throttle it feels (in a gas engine) one of the spark plugs stops working. It loses power and there's a noticeable hiss but not like an air leak.

Trying to figure out some diagnostic steps to help clear up this issue.

Also, I want to add a bit more power and was wondering what you all would recommend and in what order. I'd like to keep stock driveability and try to keep the total spend under $3k.

Thanks for being kind and for having thins great forum. I just joined but I've been lurking reading articles for about a month now.

I bet your EBPV is sticking closed. It is a valve on the turbo that helps the motor warm up faster. There is a plug under the turbo for the ebpv valve. Unplug it and it will not close. Spring pressure will hold it open.

As for power, start with a six position chip,

How many miles on the injectors? With the colder weather coming, worn injectors really start to show their ugly head. Does the tick go away or become less pronounced when the truck warms up?

It could also be something as simple as a UVCH issue.

If you can find someone that has a scan tool, do the buzz test when the engine is cold to assume the condition of the injectors.

Injectors and tuning are products that are readily available.

As far as I know these are the stock injectors. Truck has 198k miles right now. It goes away to some degree when the truck gets warm but not totally. I lost a LOT of mpg in our last cold snap. And it isn't a tick as much as an air movement sound.

And apparently I'm going to need to do a lot of term searching here.

I'll look into the EBPV valve trick but I'm not sure what the buzz test is.

EBPV - Exhaust Back Pressure Valve
It's on the turbo pedestal.

A buzz test will take more than an auto store scan tool. Auto Enginuity is the popular choice, but any "shop grade" diagnostic tool should do it. It sends electrical signals to your injectors to make sure the electronics are working right. A contribution test (with the same cool guy tool) will test the mechanical side of the injector.

If you are running factory injectors, they are likely wore out and in need of replacement. You can do the tests and replace them one by one as they wear out, but I would suggest a set of "stage 1" single shot injectors as a replacement for all. 160/0 is what I plan on going with, and they cost slightly more than OEM replacements. The pros are them being single shot and slightly larger. More efficient with more power. The con is that you need tuning. Not really a con if you're looking for a better running truck, but it is if you're of the "must keep it OEM" mindset.

My best suggestions for that budget is a pre pump filter kit from Strickly Diesel, a GTP38R turbo from another sponsor, injectors, and a custom burnt chip from POWERSTRUCK.

All your shopping needs will be found on this site in the sponsor section, these guys know best and have long engineered everything that works best for ourntrucks

Thanks for the advice. I've been reading up on the turbos and injectors. Just trying to find a good match for size for a DD truck.

Still have some basic maintenance to do: trans fluid and filter, glow plugs, suspension work (rear bump stops are GONE), etc.

Any real benefit to intake / exhaust? Think I should address reliability and driveability before heading after more power and custom tuning.

Hit up CP Trucks. They hooked me Up with a Stancor glow plug relay and glow plugs super cheap.

Intake you can go with just NAPA 6637 air filter. Exhaust, 4 inch down pipe and just straight pipe the rest. Mufflers are not necessary at all.

Found a glow plug package but nothing that had the relays. How many relays do I need?

Need to figure this out, it's starting to have a hard time starting if it doesn't get driven for a few days.

Just one. The stancor is said to be the best.
Factory one will work for most of us. I would probably do the stancor.
And stick with the Motorcraft glowplugs.

Yes but that's not needed.

Go with Stancor and never replace it again.

FYI, the glow plug relay is the shorter one more towards the turbo.
