Has anyone experienced an instant E4OD failure? I now have nothing but reverse. It happened when I was using 4Hi for the first time and had the truck in D just on a gravel road. Acted like it popped into neutral and since then only reverse. I pulled the dipstick multiple times after running it since and clean perfect level fluid is what it reads. I also pulled the test port plug out of the trans and got the same fluid look.

I was wondering if I had transfer case issues because someone told me they claim to have had a tcase only work in reverse before and it was the issue. I pulled the tcase fill plug and got nearly a quart of extra fluid? Kinda weird but everything in the tcase looked fine. Help me out I’m leaning towards transmission rebuild but what’s next to confirm that.

Thanks!

The transfer case has a few positions. In 2wd or 4x4 high the transmission is directly connected to the rear axle and forward or reverse directions are 1 to 1. The only way I could see the transfer case being the issue is if it is in neutral or something is broken where you are on the edge of neutral for the transfer case and the reverse direction is just catching but forward pushes away and becomes neutral.

You can check a few things before committing to a transmission. If your OD light is blinking that would indicate a transmission issue. To check the transfer case start with the simple things, do the 4x4 and 4x4 low light come on when you move the lever for the transfer case? There is a sensor on top of the transfer case that turns the lights on which would help indicate if the lever and linkage are moving things inside the transfer case.

You can also check the linkage on the transfer case to see if it is bound, broken, bent, etc.

Another check that may help is jacking the rear up with the park brake off and trying to spin the drive shaft. If the transmission is in park but you can spin the driveshaft in one or both directions there is a good chance the transfer case is in neutral or broken.

If you want to go a bit further, the transfer case is easy to remove, order a new gasket before hand and expect some transmission fluid to come out where it mounts to the transmission. With the transfer case out, you could spin the shafts to check if things are moving as they should be.
