what exactly are egt's related to a 97 7.3

i keep seeing posts about keeping egt's around a certain number this or that

considering i only tow desert toys is this something i need to worry about

also is getting a new exhaust gonna affect egt? or damage something?

If your truck doesnt have a programer or a chip i wouldnt worry about it. egt's relate to all diesel engines once you start adding horsepower but injecting more fuel then factory turbos and components can supply air to efficently burn. A truck used for towing/hauling should never go past 1200 with good tunes. And a good performance setup shouldnt go over 1350 in my opinion. And you'll only beneifit from a bigger ehaust system. She'll pick up a litlle power and run cooler.

EGT is exhaust gas temperature, in case you didnt know what terminology meant. The temperature, usually taken from an exhaust manifold, goes up as amount of fuel and load goes up. Stock tuning generally keeps EGTs in check, but if you have a chip to increase performance, then a pyrometer should be used to monitor the temps.

only thing i have is a superchips and a 6637 , i cutting the my magnaflow muffler out and putting a straight pipe, another question: how much boost can a stock E350 van motor turbo handle? should i be fine with those mods??

6637
superchips
straight pipe bending out by rear tire

You own 3 powerstrokes and dont monitor any of them via gauges?????????? Hell I think even stock trucks should be monitored so you know if your turbos gonna go, if you've got a streaming injector etc...

EDIT: And superchips are notorious for high egt's

two

04 6.0

89 with a 97 7.3 in it

neither of these trucks are monitored with gauges but with little mods like this should they be??

the 6.0 is bone stock also with no chip or anything

have had the superchips in for years and have not had any problems related to it

i just dont wonna put the straight pipe in and end up blowing the turbo or something

Adding the straight pipe will not make the turbo go. Once exhaust is past the turbo, it really doesn't matter where it goes as long as it can escape.

Without a pyro, you do not know what is going on inside of the cylinder. If you have one, you can sometimes detect and stop a problem before catastrophic failure occurs.

what does a pyro do??

that was my main concern, i don't wanna blow up the turbo or break anything, it still has the stock down pipe or at least said ford on it then goes to a magnaflow exhaust, i dont abuse the truck and floor it everywhere and the max i tow is maybe 5k

without having a gauge on your truck, how do you know that you dont have any issues? Have you recently taken apart the top end and looked for heat cracks, stress cracks, flashed heads etc? Superchips are notorious for high egts and for destroying auto trannies.

We've already explained the pyro... it tells you the temperature of the air coming out of the combustion chamber before it enters the turbo to get even hotter.

Your killing me man. You WONT know if there is an issue unless you monitor your rig with gauges.

when that day comes i will admit i am wrong and was an idiot for not listening

basically bone stock neither of my trucks are gonna just "weld pistons" and even if it does, im not an idiot, i know how to fix things

A egt gauge is always a great idea, I've had stock trucks run hot from time to time. Anytime you chip it you should put gauges on it. Any chip, or tuner can make temps higher.
I'm not fully sure what is a safe egt temp for trucks, I've seen the duramax's motors hold 1400-1500* daily and live.

On another note, when I got my truck I had a super chip, no gauges.towing anything I would pull the chip and return to stock. Had gauges when I went with injectors , motor lasted 13k miles before throwing a rod.
When I pulled the heads 7/8 pistons had cracks 1/2 inch or so. I know when I had my injectors temps never went 1250+ for very long, and spikes were only for a few seconds. So much for stock tuning being safe

sent while looking at a hole in my block
