only have a oil pressure gauge and engine temp besides the basics, engine only moves when towing alot up a certain hill

would the ford dealer have recommended a gauge put on an E40d

No OBS came with a factory trans temp gauge. Ford did that in late '02 or '03 and now all Ford diesel have them as far as I know.

The trans temp is just like the EGT it keeps you aware of how things are going or if you are starting to have problems. Some say EGT first then trans, for others it's the opposite but both are important.

The E4OD has a port on the side IIRC that the temp probe can screw into. Do a search there was a thread with pics on it somewhere in here.

only reason i ask is because i had the ford dealer put the E40d in, brand new from the dealer

IMO not many dealers will recommened anything that could end up costing them money. They aren't going to say here add this trans gauge thats $XXX and will help keep you from blowing the trans when they can maybe get you in to put in a trans thats $XXXX because you blew yours.

I've had 1 dealer recommened gauges and that was just because the guy was a diesel guy and knew their value.
