So I picked up a short block..I decided to use the block for insurance on mine, or to start a build.
Anyways...I learned quite a bit today, and those main bedplate bolts suck to remove with a 3/8 ratchet LOL

I know pretty much everyone on here has seen/done this before, and I respect the work that you all do..ESPECIALLY putting this back together so take it easy on the comments lol. but for those who haven't...(yes this is my little concrete pad in my backyard) block is now at the machine shop getting bored .020" and honed

I didn't know I needed to! Ehh the machine shop has the block, bedplate, and the crank. They are checking for cracks/flatness of cylinder head surface, boring the block, honing it, clean/prepping block and bedplate, and polishing the crank(not taking any material off).

Do I need to get it balanced?

I dont know anything about balancing but since your going .020 over with heavier pistons youll need to get it balanced since there will be more reciprocating weight. Thats my take on it.

Hm ok, i was eventually going to go with fords .020" rebuild kit..I wonder if they include anything about that?
Anyone know what balancing usually runs?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but you're not really supposed to just lay cranks on the ground like that right? Don't they typically build some sort of stand to make it stand vertically?

Looks good man, wish I could get a spare block and start doing this, if not to learn something at least!

Thanks! well it was heavier than I thought so I put it down real quick, took some photos, and than moved the crank and bed plate onto a spare tire in my truck for transportation/tie down. That's all I had, a nice sheet of plywood :/ if it was someone else's motor, I wouldn't be working in this little space LOL

Balancing consists of all roatating mass inside the engine. You will need to provide them with pistons, rods, rings, rod bearings, harmonic balancer, flexplate/flywheel and the crank. Figure $200-450 to get it balanced. Just depends on the shop thats doing it. Make sure that they can do bigger diesel stuff, as some places just do gasser stuff and can't balance these because of the shear weight.

Thanks for the reply! Woah! I'm assuming it's pretty necessary eh?

I didn't see you mention it so I will ask did you mark the rods for what cylinder they are out of?

No! Ah! But I wasn't planning on re sing those rods. I was going to either re use the block and swap in parts from my motor for a 200,000 mile 'refresh'. Or I was going to use the block for an all out build with Carrillo rods and swap everything else over from my current motor. But I will # them next time I pull them out!

You have the block at the shop....get them to deck it for you.

Balancing was $500.00 on mine the last go around...I can let you know what it costs me this time, in about a week. (Pick everything up on Friday)

Make sure you get the paperwork for the balancing, so you have all the weights, etc.

Tap the oil gallery holes in th efront and back of the block, and use steel pipe plugs instead of "Frost plugs".

Good Luck with your build up.

That's good information thank you! Well I think I'm going to build it with some carillos and a nice valve train. With fords overhaul kit (.020") I have to check my funds out because I plan on getting some compounds through Matt at cutting edge diesel. My truck now is eating oil...so the compounds may have to wait. I was not planning on the build, only planning on keeping the block, but I think my truck is telling me some signs that the motor is going to give up the ghost:/
