This my be a stupid question but I want to install hardened valve seats into my new heads. Is that something that the machinist will know where to get them or do you have to get them an bring them to him. If I have to get them where can I look?

if theres nothing wrong with your seats? i suggest that you leave well enough alone.

you could wind up making problems for yourself. spend all that money, drop a seat, and cost you some real money to fix it.

No idea in the 6.4's, but I do know that it is a semi-common problem on the early common rail 5.9 Cummins. I think it was 03-05. I know 2003-2004 had problems dropping seats (they were speculating high egt's were the cause) and to correct it people were putting 2006 and later heads on them. Anyway...I know there was a way they were staking them in on the earlier heads too, so maybe that is an option? I guess I am kind of out of my area of knowledge.....I'll shut up now. Lol.

thermal expansion is what causes them to fall out.

any time you can leave the stock seats in,you should.

more problems.

ill actually fix the real reason why they crack, and not have to about seats falling out, because some retard told me that it would stop the heads from cracking.

lmfao.

On edit:
I dont feel the need for a e-battle - Everyone needs to make the decision on there own about what they are comfortable with when it comes to valve seat issues.

Better be a DAMN good reason to know that the crack at the valve seat has nothing to do with the crack at the valve seat.

Better be a DAMN good reason to know that the crack at the valve seat has nothing to do with the crack at the valve seat.

The sharp edges around the valve pockets,gp bores, and nozzle bore.

Those sharp edges create a torch like hot spot where the heat comes to the edge and has no where to go.

Once the intense heat over a period of time works on these areas. The crack develops.

The crack travels into the seat area, and anywhere else. Another valve,gp bore,or nozzle bore.

The remedy is quite simple. It goes back to the days of the 318 dodge heads that had rhe same issue.

The remedy? Simply buff those sharp edges into a smooth radius. Thus not allowing heat to come to a point.

Get rid of the hot spots. Get rid of the cracks.
