So for the guys not wanting to put out the extra dollar for synthetic (it is fairly difficult to persuade a 45 year old man that he needs to put down $120 to fill his truck with syn, when the traditional oil has never caused an issue in his mind)

What is the best bang for the buck when it comes to motor oil, out of the traditionals is Delo probably the best? Is there an additive you can add to it to make it better but still much less than the full synthetics?

hell yeah:whs: good break in process.
i was always told that if a motor was going to have problems it would be as soon as its fired up after a rebuild.... rebuild, start, warm up, skinny to the floor, drive a hundred miles and change the oil. repeat but change oil at 500 miles the next time, repeat but change oil at 1500 miles, then on to normal oci.

You mean like this motor break-in with less than 20 miles on it? (Ignore the lack of truck setup and driver experience with a brand new truck build... LOL )

Says the guy that street drives a 1K Hp capable truck! LOL

A lot more power than I was use to, a brand new clutch that grabbed different than the old one, stiffer rear springs, no suspension stops, it was a real experience! LOL The truck setup came a long way after that run..... but my goal was to pull at that event - I was suppose to hook the week before but had issues getting it put together - that was hook number 1 once that truck became a dedicated puller, and I had only hooked it twice the previous year.

Easing out on the clutch is what caused the bounce! By the time I figured out how to drive that truck it was taking the chain tight, take it to 4500 RPMs and dump the clutch! LOL

oh wow... thats prolly the first ive heard of someone doing that on purpose. i'v been in a couple guys trucks that said that its how it has to be done and didn't know why they were hopping. i jumped in rev'ed it up slipped the clutch smooth sailing from there... but that just show's how different trucks can be...

So what is the bottom line on oil then? Add the additive? Switch to synthetic? Got a fresh rebuild coming and want whats best for it, but not break the bank. Gonna run a Gen3 pump.

It wasn't quite dumping the clutch - but I had to make sure I was completely off the clutch right after the tires broke loose - which is almost dumping it. LOL

Delo 400 breaking in.
Valvoline Syn after a few miles.
I am sending a sample in of Delo 400 today with 535 miles on it.

History of oil changes on this motor:
  • First change 189 mi. Total mileage on build 189 mi.
  • Second change 693 mi. Total mileage on build 882 mi.
  • Dyno'd @ Wildman Charity - Engle's on fuel
  • Third change 274 mi. Total mileage on build 1,156 mi.
  • Forth change 998 mi. Total mileage on build 2,054 mi.
  • 1/4 11.68@117_ A/T Tires - Ennis, Fuel
  • Fifth change 1,250 mi. Total mileage on build 3,304 mi.
  • Dyno'd @ II / Boost 105 psi
  • Sixth change 535 mi. Total mileage on build 3,859 mi.

Since the boost was up on the Industrial Injection Dyno event I feel it might have pushed some fuel past the rings so the report will show this.
I'm back on Valvoline 5-40 Extreme since the motor is well on it's way to breaking in with dino oil.

So what is the bottom line on oil then? Add the additive? Switch to synthetic? Got a fresh rebuild coming and want whats best for it, but not break the bank. Gonna run a Gen3 pump.
do what blowby said... if you don't wanna run syn then add the schaeffers moly ep to it after a couple thousand miles..

heui's don't like thin oil that much... after a few thousand miles most of the oils out there the heui's will shear to a 30w rather fast... and bigger hpops with shear it quicker...
