im also curious to what that ring is on the top of the piston, thats not really normal and its not really common to see from clean up of the block

No head pics from him, but he said 6 and 8 were also slapped. I'm suspecting EBP too. Wastegate time.

But why just the driver side and not passenger?

Wonder if they switched the heads when they put it back together and this .is the reman head side? If it was machined below spec valves may hit and piston may of hit head. The clean ring on the piston looks like the machine marks have been 'flattened' slightly. Need pics of head.

Looks like the valve stamped the piston harder on the outside edge of the piston, hitting at an angle.

Is the egr still in place?

The pistons arent pefectly flat, they usually look like that when they contact

I asked if there was any more piston slap and he said on 6 and 8. So I'm assuming none on the passenger side which the head was replaced due to cracking when HGs were done.

you might verify that for sure tomorrow

If the egr was still in place that would explain the left side
but since you dont have a gate its hard to say

Are you saying that the EGR delete will cause over speed and too much EBP which leads to the valve float and slap I'm lost here.

do you have any pictures of the bottom of the cylinder head?

Looks to me like there is some melting nea0r that biggest part of the crack, i'm guessing thats where the crack started. I would be putting a new injector in that cylinder for sure.

Looks to me like you also have a back pressure issue, both valves that hit are exhaust valves. generally tho exhaust valves hit first, so it could be a combo of overspeed and back pressure.

Injector was replaced on the affected cylinder

I have seen egr act similar to a wastegate at really high back pressure and since the egr feeds from the passenger side that side generally runs slightly lower back pressure. When the back pressure is lower on one side you shouldnt have as much or any contact from the valves

i always seemed to break the drivers side pistons until i went to a long radius intake elbow. then they broke alot more even. LOL

so did you just piston slap it or what?

did the injector get replaced BEFORE the engine let go, or did you replace it at the same time you fixed the engine?

I guess im a bit confused on all the details about this

No expert here but that is a good thought. Another theory since all of the pistons hadn't kissed the valve on the one side is the pushrods were bent and rotated slightly to hold the valve open slightly. In that case they didn't switch sides on the heads most likely. I personally had never heard of that but there was a heated debate between Craig and I think Imelio about that a few years ago. I do remember Dusting had to step in as a moderator on that thread but it was a very informative thread.
