It doesn't necessarily have to be in the truck. It could be run on a stand if you fabbed up a stand that you could bolt the motor mounts to. Kinda like a mock frame

I guess I was misleading... Yes im on a budget, if I had the $ I would just buy a new motor for 5k and be done with it. I want a new motor, one I can run for 300k@ 550+ hp . I don't want to be pulling motors out every 100k because that's all it lasted. There is nothing wrong with my motor now ( other than pmrs) and I guess I want the piece of mind that it has a NEW motor ...1000$ for a rebuild kit is in my budget .

I have no idea how the previous owner maintained it, or what shape the bearings and such are in, even with good compression lots of other stuff could go wrong no?

well ***, why didnt you say your current motor was fine? take the obs motor and start doing to that what you want.. thats a no brainer... especially since you dont NEED it in right away... then as budget allows more goodies add them... tear it down, check tolerances, hell it may just need a slight hone job maybe a 10 over kit, put in a rebuild kit with the piston bowls machined, all your superduty parts and drive on man.. that was way simpler.

if you have never done it, prolly should watch and learn from a shop. gotta make sure everything stays even and smooth.. bowl radius machining takes the square edge from the factory bowl and radius's it smooth to help stop hot spots and cracking... or it will look like this.. look close to the 12 and 6 o'clock positions on both pistons... all 8 of mine are like that..

Make sure that there aren't any cracks between the valves. It's not a real common occurence on these heads...but it'd sure make me sick to look over something so simple to check for and put a head back on the truck. IF it were ME....I'd have them pressure tested, magged, and new cups put in....but that's just me. Shoot I might even opt for a light port and polish job.

Hard to say with the port and polish, but the mag job and pressure test with new cups should be able to be done for ~$500 give or take.
