Torque converter?

Guys I think my converter is going out. It is fine in every gear but second. It feels like the motor is just revving but the truck barely gains any speed. I'm limping it down to Ohio in stock tune. Any advice?

seems like if its just 2nd gear then it would be the 2nd gear clutches :shrug:

I think if it would be the converter it would do it in ever gear. I would guess it would be more of a trans issue.

Are you revving high in second then shifting straight to drive/4th?

Is the od light flashing? Mine did this when I roasted 3rd. I had a 2/3 shift error code stored.

It will go first, shift to second and rev then if I let out it hits 3rd and is fine then hits 4th. It just has little pull in 2nd.

you have access to a techII or other scanner?? Those will tell you lockup in percentages to see if its locked up yet slipping. just a thought thats how I tested mine when it was bad.

And no trans codes???

FWIW thats what mine did for a week before it started skipping 3rd all together.

Another twist. If I manually go 1,2,drive, turn off of, then turn od on it shifts better and will actually pull in second

Tried it with the tune on and it is fine in every gear but second. Locks the convertor in od and pulls just as good as before.

No the od light doesn't blink or anything no codes that I can tell.

That can't possibly be the torque converter.

I put new fluid and filter in it tonight and it helped out alot so I'm hoping it helps and I can drive it again without having to worry about it.

Doesn't look great. There are some larger pieces in there. You still have too much fluid in the pan to see how dirty it really is. Not much you can do at this point but drive it if it shifts good, but I would start preparing yourself for a replacement.

Here is a link to a thread of mine where I was asking questions about my trans issue. There is a photo of the pan on the second page. About four months later the trans went. I dog on it and pull a trailer alot though.

That doesn't look healthy! I hope I can Atleast make it till summer that would be nice. I am honestly debating on taking my chip clear out or putting it up under the dash to resist temptation lol.

And you know it's burnt when the smell gives you an instant headache and I usually love the smell of atf
