Mine went out at 162K and after researching that seems to be the milage the 4R100's like to go out.

Thats 'the' mileage? Ive never heard that. Mine still works. I just wouldnt trust it for a.long trip. Ive got 250k+. Tuned for at least 150k. What commonly fails at 150? Maybe peoe tune at 100k and then about 50k miles later:evil

I researched 4R100 transmissions going out on google when mine went out and I came across threads with people having the same thing at the similar mileage give or take 20K. Some failures are the snap rings and sometimes they will float in there and not cause a problem and some do. Also there are 3 bolts that hold some type of center section (can't remember the correct term) and those will come loose and cause a hydraulic leak in the trans that will cause slipping. I also think there is some type of bushing that wears out as well. Give John Wood or BTS a call and they'll tell you everything.

Ivd talked to john wood and bts. Never heard that.

The center support loosens from the flexing of the case and heat cycling. Rubber only lasts so long under these conditions as well. Ive just honestly never heard 160k +/- 20k for trans failure. Seems as though there would be waaaay too many variables to determine. I had a 460 gasser that spit e4ods out every 40k. Maintenance was flawless. My 4r100 in my 2k has been maintained as meticulously and is still going at six times that. My 03 spit a trans out a 4r @ 78k with no tuning. It seems to be random, ime.

Ill look into it...

I am going to try and weigh my costs and see if it would be cheaper to go with a built 4r or if it's time to put a zf6 in it finally

That is NOT going to make anything more reliable. By the time you gef all the stuff together and do all the work you'll still have a six speed rated for 400hp. Go built auto.
