Transfer Tanks VS. Replacement Fuel Tank

Decide what will work best.

1) A true transfer tank that fills as you drive with an auto switch or switch in the cab.
2) A toolbox/transfer tank that has a filling nozzle to refill the truck fuel and other equipment.
3) A replacement larger tank such as a Titan.

You can search around for all of these and not pay full retail. Of course each has it's pros/cons. Are you just wanting to increase range of the truck?

1) I like the idea of it filling as I drive so that if I'm on a long trip I don't have to just use it as an emergency back up....I'd rather it be a fill it and let it use it as needed.

2) I like the idea of have a toolbox back there that I can keep a few things in (I don't need a lot of space). I'm a weapons instructor so I would probably just keep range type tools back there.

3) Someone on this thread mentioned something about when full it makes the truck lean more on one side? I wouldn't like that but if that's not the case then the Titan wouldn't be bad because the bed space would still be available, if needed, but the dang Titan is just so expensive.

I guess if it really came down to it, I could manage with the OEM tank and just throw a few tools in the back of the truck as needed (put them up when not in use). Just would be a "nice" addition to have the extra fuel capability, if needed. Not something I'm willing to just drop $1000+ on regardless of which choice (1, 2 or 3) it was.

I know.........we spend more than that on Rims and other accessories. Just the extra fuel tank capability isn't high on my list. It's just a "nice" addition....a "if the moon and stars lined up perfectly I'd buy it" type thing. You know?

Craigslist is your friend as well as the boards. Good luck!!

1) Now many long trips do you take yearly?

2) Toolbox is ALWAYS a great idea. +1

3) I just wouldn't top it off until I really needed it for that long trip.

Cost is directly related to quality. You could get a small tool/transfer setup going for under $1k if you research your options. It might not be the top shelf stuff but would fit the need.

Just keep an eye on craigslist. I got a 30 gallon one that was only about 9" thick that didn't eat up really any bed space. I got it for 150 and it gravity fed into the main tank. I did have a shut off switch as well.

You can find the huge 100+ gallon ones for a few hundred on craigslist.

Can you give me the names of a couple (for example) that I can be on the lookout for? Thanks...

This is my setup. I picked up this 55gal unit as well as a 100gal unit at an auction for $175. I have it t'd into the vent line from my main tank after it goes through a 15mic water sep/filter. I have it controlled by a solenoid valve.

I have a 45 gallon RDS transfer tank setup. It's attached to my tank. I get over 900 miles when filling both of them up. If I'm doing straight highway, over 1000 miles. I'd share a picture, but don't have it uploaded anywhere.

I have the same issue as was previously stated... if I leave the valve open, I will end up with a puddle of fuel under my truck. I really need to find a way to remedy this.

Have the wire that activates the solenoid on a keyed hot source. So anytime the truck shuts off the valve shuts off. I have mine wired on the factory aux switches and they are only hot when the key is on.

This was going to be my backup plan. Just want to make sure I don't have something defective before going through all the work. Thanks!

Thefuelbox.com has nice auxiliary tanks that are computer controlled the pump turns on at 1/4 and shuts off at 3/4 to full. They have tool box combos as well. The tanks are pricey but cheaper than a titan tank.
