OK...

#1.... So, I had a STOCK trans, the way she came from Ford, with 130,000 miles, and NEVER changed the fluid... I was conducting an experiment, on how long she would last, and finally, I gave in before she did... So, I put a TC on there, nothing else to enhance performance, and a deep pan, and fresh fluid. She felt great at first, but soon began to shake. I talked to FORCEFED6.4 about it, days before the chit the bed, and it felt as if I had a bad U joint... A little shudder at cruising speed. the next day, BAM.... and after Tony helped me swap them, and got the dead trans back to Aaron, only to find out that the TC blew up.

Spartan 275 EL

I beat the chit out of the stock trans. Boosted launches, racing Camaros, pulling heavy loads, etc. Without regard for the trans, as I expected it to die... LOL Then when I go the upgraded TC and my 71mm on there, I was actually pretty easy on her. Never boosted a launch, and didnt run her very hard at all.

#2.... Built trans, Suncoast IronPac 3, billet input, transgo shift kit, and another TC. Then in new mexico, this one chit the bed. Ended up getting a new trans and TC sent out to me, and having Ford do the instal, and later finding out that the stock intermediate shaft snapped... Now, this irritated me, as I NEVER boosted a launch with this setup, and only towed a 1,500 pound trailer for 800 miles. Then, I drove at 70 mph on the highway to NM. Def never beat on this setup. But, everything in the trans, to include the TC, is just fine, after installing a new Billet Intermediate Shaft...

IDP Extreme X, delay lock

#3.... this is in the truck now. Billet input, IronPac 3, another TC, transgo shift kit. I now have that low power shudder, that I had before, with #1, and I am not overly keen on trusting this setup just yet... Again, no boosted launches, and I have not towed heavy yet...

GearHead Hot street, STOCK trans file.

I have a trans setup, that has handled 800 + hp race trucks, and I am scared to put any abuse on it at all, after I beat the chit out of my STOCK trans, for 130 K...

Here is my question...

STOCK, was just that... stock...............................................lived 130,000 miles******** winner!
#1 was stock with a DPC TC................................................lived 1,200 miles
#2 was full built with RCD TC and shift kit............................lived 2,000 miles
#3 is full built with DPC TC (1st one, rebuilt) and shift kit.......prob gonna die soon....

I see a TC on this rig as a recurring theme, and each was a different brand, and each trans dies in a unique way...... So, after digesting what Tadd had said on my last "Trans died" thread, about the TCs holding TOO well... I am looking to do this...

#4.... Iron Pac 3 kit, that was already in there, and is not destroyed, deep pan, ditching the shift kit (take care of shift firmness with the tuning), billet intermediate and input, and a STOCK TC.... Does this seem stupid to anyone?

HEAVYHAUL's 450, with 200 K miles, pulls 27 K trailer all over WY, has a STOCK trans.... I think, now that I have fresh clutches, and more fluid capacity and better cooling, and a new Ford TC, that I should last at least that long, as I also have a less powerful turbo setup (he has Tow Xs, and I have a 71 atmo) and he pulls WAY heavier, and WAY more often that I do...

Discuss.... (please) LOL

Sounds like a good plan to me, but couldn't you still do an upgraded TC without shift kit? As long as you have tuning that doesn't shift so hard, which I know you have every tune and tuner ever made. LOL

And if the stock trans with the TC had have had a shift kit in it, then I would agree. TC upgrade, is common in every failure... Not the shift kit... And this one, we have the line pressure way down, to accomodate the shift kit... and it is still looking like she will be quiting soon...

And I do have a few of them... LOL I now own 3 scts, and only 2 trucks.... Time do get another truck, I guess....

I dont think any trans is going to last with the problems you are having that I believe are electrical related.

We have been all over that thing. There are at least 3 grounds that we found under there, and they are all clean, and tight. After talking with the trans guy, my charging is not an issue. Less than 12 volts, yes, problem. More than 15 volts, yes problem. But I would be throwing battery codes, long before that... I might have something that is starting to chit the bed, electronically, but they are not causing the trans to go nuts, as far as we can see. And I have had 2 dealerships check my charging system, and neither have suggested swapping out parts or any other "problems" that they have found with the charging system. One has said that the starter seems to spin a bit slower than new, but not that there is a problem with it, just that it seems slower...

Yeah, I see what you are saying now, even though TC was added late in life of your stock trans. I hope this plan works for you or you wont be able to afford a 3rd truck for that extra SCT, but you will have a nice collection of blown trans stories. LOL

Yeah, and the stock trans was doing just fine. No shift flares, not a whole lot of TC slip, etc...

stock converters are triple disc already. they are plenty strong.

as tadd even stated, the 450-550 chassis trucks are heavier, stiffer suspension, and really no side wall give in the 19.5 tires. i would have to agree that all these factor in in your situation.

what i would do is this.

option A= run a stock converter, and take the converter springs from the shift kit out. leave the main pump regulator spring upgrade in, so that pressure spikes are out of the equation.

option B= run a billet front cover converter(for balloning reasons) with everything else stock. stock stall, etc, etc. with everything else stated in option a.

this will give you alittle added strength, but still not beef things up to the point that you do not have any cushion/ give in the driveline.

lets face it. your 450 isn't a race vehicle. lets stop beefing it up like one.your 250 can be used for that. tune the truck to a modest power level, that will far surpass the capabilities of a stock 450 and call it a day.

I agree completely... I have been trying to improve upon this rig, without making it unreliable.... LOL I def do not need another race truck. I think that the introduction to a good, aftermarket TC has been the only thing that has proven NOT to work on my rig, so, that is the one thing that I was going to definately leave out of the equation this time... STOCK lasted 130 K, on the original Ford fluid... If I put the new trans as close to that level, with only upgraded clutches, and it goes BANG, then, I guess that there is more going on than I figured... I also do not have a lot of "power adders" on this rig. Just a 71mm, and I do not run RACE tunes... I like Hot Street, as I get good mileage, and if I wanna romp on it, I def can...

Hey Corb, I still have that "sweet stocker" if you need it...LOL

LOL thanks! But i hope not... LOL

If all goes well, I am riding the bike up to Aaron's event, and run the chit out of my 250... If it does not blow up, I am loading the bike in the back, and driving it home, with my "latest idea" transmission in the back seat... LOL Ill just have it installed here, and get my "about to die trans" back up there in a week or two...

gonna be selling the trans and TC pretty cheap to recoup some money that I let loose... LOL all parts will be refreshed prior to sale...
