If your main goal is "response"... Then I would be very careful on what turbo you choose. With those giant tires and 3.55 gears you are going to hate life if you go with too big of a turbo. I saw you thinking about a 71mm :badidea:
The stock turbo on these trucks is super responsive. You can get a lot more power out of a turbo swap... but I would not plan on it being "more responsive" down low. High up the the rpm band you wont even notice the lag. But with your giant tires and stock gearing then it is going to take a while for you to get to that higher rpm range that the bigger turbo likes.
If you don't care so much about dyno or track numbers... and your main goal is responsiveness... and you want power whenever you "hit the pedal"... Then I would go with one of the smaller turbos you are looking at.
Let me ask a question... Why are you changing turbos? Is it not responsive enough? Or is it for reliability?
I completely agree and thanks for the feedback. I didn't really want to go with anything bigger than 64mm, but thought I would try to get some input from people more knowledgeable on the subject.
The stock turbo does seem to be ideal for my needs come to think of it. Isn't the low end side of the compressor wheel smaller than 50mm? I suppose the main reason behind me wanting to switch turbos is because I'm running out of things to do to my truck, that and I thought it would make me into some type of cool guy or something. I don't know. I have no friends.
Anyway, I have plans to re-gear with 4.10's in the future, but that's going to be another few grand, so I figured a new turbo would bring me more joy for the money. However, I ended up buying an electric piano and some guitar pickups today, so there went a couple grand out of my turbo fund. I actually ordered a throttle sensitivity booster from BD Diesel a couple days ago, so maybe it will solve my response problems on it's own. We'll see...
