Hello all new diesel owner here,
I purchased a 2010 6.4 with a few upgrades, deleted, and tuned. No it’s not studded. I thought I knew enough to take on this motor and I bite off a lot! I will not admit that it’s to much I live this truck! But I just got a motor for $1000 and I want to rebuild this properly as it’s my project/enjoyment. It has a OEM block, crank, pistons, cam and head. I am looking at KDD steel pistons kit and the “stage 2.5” set up. This is my daily. I know i didn’t go the best route, so I’m looking to you guys hoping to get some assistance with tools needed besides basic, computers/scanners, and all the tips a tricks. I bleed blue and I love my fords. Any knowledge or advice would be greatly appreciated.

What is your goal for horse power?

What do you plan to use the pickup for?

Putting 6.7 pistons in is for most folks a lot of money spent that was not needed.

I’m hoping for 500-600hp but have the ability to 800. Mind you I realize that in order to get to the higher Pony’s that I need different transmission mods, wheels ect. To do it safely but then it’s leaning into track use. I’m not trying to run from cop or any illegal street activity.

This is my project/daily/man cave. Also I live right off Woodward in Detroit, I like to have appropriate fun and Cruz during the nice weather. But this is my pride and joy. I still want to have the ability to tow with the cool factor.

From what little experience and knowledge I do have this motor suffers from some rush engineering and manufacturing problems bc of emissions and what not(in my opinion). The steel 6.7 pistons seem like the answer to the pistons cracking while increasing mileage and longevity. I’m open to suggestions my primary problem is I for machine work I have to seek out others for that. I want to do as much work as possible myself.

I hope I answered your questions.

I would personally use coated maxxforce 7 pistons with billet rods.

Run a set of KC drop in turbos. With the stock hpfp and injectors that will get you over 600 to the ground with the proper tuning. If you want more HP just add bigger injectors and a dual hpfp setup.

Put a mild stage one cam in it and a set of kdd heads if you want to up the efficiency of the setup. Add the appropriate valve springs and pushrods. You could also add a ported intake while you have it apart.

A no limit intake would be good as well.

I better intercooler and piping would be good as well.

^whs I couldn’t have said it better myself. Our test truck is a 2010 Harley 6.4, and with dual k16s, 100% injectors, and our 59/80 drop in turbos we’ve done over 1000 to the wheels, not something we’d recommend long term, but doable. Given this is on a fully built kdd long block, with max force pistons I believe, it was before the steel piston 6.7s were out, definitely before Jared did his magic to make them work in other motors. Easily be over 600 with just good tunes and drop in turbos.
