So I was checking things over today on my new setup. I replaced the hot side cac boots and noticed I had a very small amount of oil on the inside of the comp housing. There was no oil at the inlet or outlet of the intercooler.

So I pulled the intake off and there is no oil in the intake, I thought maybe it was sucking oil out of the air filter. Also pulled the DP and didn't see any oil residue there either.

So I then checked for end play and for in/out slop and it had a little bit of in/out play. I thinking the thrust beating is already going out of it.

What would cause this to happen so fast? The trucks only been running the setup about a month.

And also how worried should I be, I don't wanna have the thing gernade and risk sending **** through the motor.

It's a new borg 66/73/.91. Cast. Not really sure what your idea of surge is, I have barked it a few times from letting off under a heavy load.
Probably 1000 miles on it maybe.

"Barking" aka turbo surge is bad for a turbo. When you hear that sound the turbo that was spinning at over 80000rpm just stopped and spun backwards, each time you hear it bark. It's not good and that can mess up a turbo

That's what I thought you were meaning by surge. I would guess that that's what happened to it then. Looks like a BOV would be a good investment for my driving style.

Would you run a stock turbo that hard. I realize a 6l never had a fixed blade compressor with cheap, cast everything but that is exactly what an s366 is. Its a cheap assed charger that just happens to work on some smaller diesels.

They are 700 dollars. You can wreck a few before you tally ul the cost of a purpose built charger. Or you could spend the difference welding in crap that will keep it alive at double the cost of the charger to begin with.

Im not being a crank or anything but these things are cheap and I wouldnt expect a leak free life when overfueled.

There is a spec for how much play can be in a turbo shaft. In and out isn't as bad as up and down movement

Pretty sure there should be no in and out play as that means the thrust bearing is getting bad/wore. Up and down is allowed because until the engine is running the oil drains out and loosens up a hair. Once the engine runs, it fills, spins and centers out.

You can buy rebuild kits and install them yourself. They are about $100

.003" end play is factory tolerance. Anything over that is a thrust on its way out. I build 95% of my S3 and S4 turbo with a 360 thrust.

Ive seen customers destroy thrusts in 50 miles or less. Just happens if its not sized properly or how its driven.

I'd say it's well over .003 since I can feel it with just my hand.
What is needed to go to a 360 thrust does the CHRA need to be machined to accept it or can I just upgrade it without modifications.

It can be upgraded with no modifications. Don't really understand why they aren't just built like that in the first place...can't be a huge difference in price...

My 362FMW has the 360* bearing upgrade. Don't have much time on it as of yet, but I bought it used and it's still going strong. I'll keep an eye on it either way.
