Innovative or Gearhead if you had to pick one?

You have a '08. If you have a heavy right foot, you need studs not matter what tune run rated over 200.

That used to be the assumption, but doesn't seem to always be the case. Tuning has evolved immensely over the last few years. Dustin's black truck stood up to more abuse in stock form than most.

You see more than I do so I will take your word for it. I know there are a few that have held up (yours is an example), but it seems like most don't (of course that could be on older tuning). I always figured if you are making 600 RWHP or more, you have to be running some pretty high cylinder pressures (even with good tuning) and eventually that would lead to head bolts stretching and ultimate HG failure. Maybe I am a little biased from my experience...I almost never ran a tune over 210 (usually just "canned" SCT tunes with an occasional bigger RCD tune) prior to my HG lettin go...of course, my tuning then wasn't what it is today.

Reason y is I would like to do studs one at a time to save a little money. But I've tuned for a little over a year and majority is on the xtreme race. I have no signs of popped hgs but under wot I get a little puking. But I think there too much coolant in the tank. I don't have the upgraded tank. So was just wandering what numbers I would see on a pressure test. Sorry for the detail

If you are hooked to the degas, 16 is max. If you see 16, you are pressurizing the cooling system which means HG or EGR. If HG, it will stay above 12 for quite a while whereas if EGR, it will change a little more with throttle position. You should make a run at WOT to test it. Personally, if there is even a question you may have puked, I would lean to towards NOT doing them one at a time so you can inspect the heads including magnaflux while they are off.

Popped headgaskets on both banks and popped both coolers. A little under a year of being tuned with IDP tunes. Always on Xrace or Xstreet. I didnt think I was too hard on her either but I must of been. No way to honestly tell you if a tune is safe or not. Tuning may have come a long way but these trucks are still not meant to handle 300+ more hp than they are rated for. Spartan's 310 tune runs harder than the 345 also just so you know. IDP and Gearhead will both be an upgrade from the KEM tunes

Ok so I've Benn doing alot of researching about these 2 tunes: gearheads race and idp extreme x. I'm a little confused, from the threads I've been reading these 2 tunes are very similar in hp ratings. Why in gearheads race tune does he recommend studs and idp's extreme x tune I was told via idp it'd be ok to drive with out studs or upgraded tranny as a daily driver? I mean needing studs and not needing studs is a pretty big deal...

All tunes are pretty much ok to drive without studs or upgraded tranny as a DD.

Same here, I burned up the factory limited slip-clutch packs w/ in the first few weeks of getting the truck tuned.. but it was fun.

When I first got my 6.4 and was running the KEM 210 it would peg leg alot, after I started running gearhead hot street/race, it always spun both tires. I was very confused but one of them things I didn't even want to ask questions, just went with the flow LOL.

OP you can't go wrong with either, I will be having this debate with myself also when it comes time to tune my 6.0. And running a big tune is always a risk to blow HG's, or a transmission. Just one of them things, you gotta pay to play so be prepared for it to happen! :toast:

Coming from the 345 was very hard for me to get used to. Its very responsive and shifts firm. Two things that make it feel fast. The hd 300 pulls very hard but has normal throttle response where the 345 has everything at the tip of the pedal. But the 300 is still faster at the track. so I dont know, hard decision.

How much is the average headstud job from a performance shop? Is it any more or less expensive if they would pull the cab or leave it on and do it one by one? I have my ARPs and sinister egr/cooler delete so I just got to get it installed now. Still reading up on each tune and comparing the two from people's reviews?? Thanks for all your guys feedback!

I think alot of shops will still pull the cab to do them 1 by 1. Where are you located?

After all I have read, I wouldn't be crazy to do them one at a time, unless the truck/engine was brand new... Plus there are some other preventative maintenance things I would do when the cab was up as well. Springs, pushrods, etc... Lifting the cab, just for studs, is a huge bill, for not a lot of upgrades. I would get a few more things done while it was up.

Why not do them one at a time? I've read up on a couple guys doing them like this cab on. I mean I know it's no walk in the park but it is doable...

So you can check the health of your heads (including for cracks, lifter/rockers, etc.) and pistons, plus that is a great time to look at valvetrain upgrade, intake manny, exh manny, up pipes, turbos, etc.

well. I did mine one at a time to save time. and they seemed okay. but this time I pulled the heads, they were def blown. just not puking, guess I was keeping my coolant so low in the bottle it wasnt puking. I keep it right at the cold fill or below some.

I just wouldn't advise it again. luckily mine weren't cracked.

I did one at a time it was a pain in the a$$ and dident fix my problem. When I pulled the cab found both heads cracked from exhaust to injector on almost every cylinder and from intake to exhaust on 4 of them.

Is that when you found the cracked piston?

Studs one at a time is never going to fix a problem.
