Something to think about: last night I helped a guy dial in his waste gate which he needed on stock fuel. His mods include no limit intake & IC piping, head studs, conventional Gearhead race tuning, 4" turbo back exhaust, precision waste gate, 71 mm atmo, and stock vgt. At max effort, the truck would peg the ebp sensor at 86 absolute. Baro is 12.5 where we were, so 73.5 is where it stopped reading. With a few turns of the regulator, we set it to peak at 68, and settle down to 65 max, with peak boost hovering at 52. On the contrary, when I had 15% over nozzles and twin pumps pushing a 59/72.4 mm combo on my truck, I left the gate shut because back pressure was still under control. The main difference between the set-ups is that the larger turbine wheel on the 59 mm vgt allows for a lot more flow, despite being driven harder.

Not trying to derail, pm me if neccessary, any tips or advice for dialing it in? Ill be adding one to get my Ebp under control and have zero experience with them.

I would have sworn that when I was reading this you mentioned the EBP at WOT would get about 5 PSI higher with the 59. Am I mistaken?

peak ebp is down on stock appearing setups with larger turbine wheels with all other things constant because of larger area for the air to flow through.

If the gate is plumbed with full boost to the side port, and regulated boost to the top, start with the regulator valve completely counter clockwise, and screw it in until pressure drops to the desired level. I believe a lot of guys have theirs at roughly 3.5 full turns clockwise. You need to do full throttle runs on your most aggressive tunes, and record peak back pressure each time. keep screwing in the regulator in roughly 1/2 turn increments until you get close. After that, you may need to move it as little as 1 click until you get it perfect.

Is there more than one way to plumb it? Full boost would come from a port on the intake elbow? Where does the regulated boost source come from?

yes, there is more than one way to do it. i gate from the lower egr cooler mount on my drivers side uppipe, venting to downpipe.

originaly, i grabbed boost from the intake elbow and teed off closer to the gate with full boost to the top and regulated to the side. i had difficulty tuning it that way and in fact it never worked properly. on the off chance the gate opened, it snapped open and shut not smoothly.

With Morgan @ Midwest Diesels help, i now have an open to atmosphere side port and regulated boost to the top with the heaviest combination of springs in my 46mm precision gate. it now works consistently and smoothly.

you probably know this but the side port adds pressure to the drive pressure side (against spring pressure) and the top port assists the springs.

So quick 60-100+mph hard roll on had following:
1250ish egt
50+ish psi
72ish EBP

Sorry about all the ish just an idea of couple dashes. 76mm, stock fuel, and stock Vgt fellers.

With all the air mods done, stock fuel and VGT, if the only thing I changed was going from my 72 to a 76 would I make more power?
Enough to be worth the cost?
What about if I add a 59 in there to replace the stock unit?
When I look on Elites site they say on stock fuel I'm not even maxing out my 72, so I wondered if there was any gain going bigger.....

Eventually he'll get bored with the boat just like every other boat owner.

bored with the little boat yes. wait until he has a 35-38 ft boat. well he's in a lake so that could get boring....the ocean is more exciting...
