Start of injection timing?
I would think that would definitely need to be optimized due to the lack of a pilot injection. It would be nice to see stock obs vs stock SD timing tables. That may get you pointed in the right direction.

I wish I was fumbling along with you on this, but it just wasn't in my budget to get minotaur yet. It's coming though. :)

I honestly don't understand why we need different calibrations yet. As the plunger travels down it passes the relief in the barrel causing the pilot shot then finishes the injection event. Maybe PW or...?

It's the pw, as the singles are using the fuel in more efficient manner. They need less pw to achieve the same amount of energy because all if the fuel is injected when conditions are optimal as apposed to wasting some of it on the pilot injection.

I spent the last week reading this entire thread. I would like to thank most of you for your time and sharing your experiences.

I would like to give Charlie a special thanks. It would be an experience for me to have a few homebrews (I have homebrewed for ~16 years) with you. I retired at 55 (now 58), having spent over 30 years in IT. The sharing of code (open sourcing) I don't believe will ever become popular with humans IMO. They are overwhelmingly greedy and selfish. I was in a committee years ago and open sourcing came up. The project leader promptly stated that open sourcing was just a form of socialism.

I'm a truck and diesel neophyte; I purchased the truck in my sig last October. It was my father's, a no rust (Arizona) plan Jane. It will be used to pull our 6'x12' aluminum enclosed cargo trailer, which I converted into a boondock camper. We do a lot of boondocking on BLM land and in National Forests. It will see a lots of two lane roads (we are shunpikers) and has more horsepower than we need now.

The last component of the drive train will be to shore up the injectors. They are not bad, but at 146,00 miles and 18 years old. They are showing their age. When replacing them, I'm looking for mpg and efficiency, not mega hp. From my current understanding, I'm thinking a set of baby swamps and swamp tunes for my TS6. Are their injectors out their that would better serve my needs?

Open Source has come a long ways in some areas. There are plenty of guys that actively support a number of coding projects that are quite successful. Look at the Linux program, or some of the RepRap 3D printing equipment that is both hardware and software and treated as open source.

Just thinking out loud for a moment - I have Arduino programming, Raspberry Pi, various 3D printer components and support software that are all open source and work quite well. I could also build CNC mill, laser, plasma, etc... all on open source hardware and software that are quite impressive in their capabilities. Granted its a huge change - but there is a strong movement in some areas to go in that direction.

True, but those are just crumbs when compared to the revenue generated overall by programming. I mean/meant no disrespect. I remember my code pig days well.

No offense taken at all - just providing a different perspective. I totally understand when you mean crumbs - but you have to start somewhere and I personally think it has been making great strides in the last 5-6 years. It might be a passing fad - or it could be the start of a trend. Only time will tell.

Has tuning been improved upon the last few years commercially for these 7.3 trucks? Has anyone noticed any improvement? I know I haven't heard of any 7.3 blowing rods out the side within the last couple years so mabey? I know I can't tell a difference in tunes now or the tunes from back 7 or 8 years ago. They were good back then and they are still good today. Of coarse I'm sure there could always be improvements and I am hoping threads like this will force a push to improve upon the already great tuning

I would say the biggest thing would be taking out torque down low to keep PMR's alive. I'm sure others have input as well.

More of us are self tuning than years ago. The chips have improved. Instead of a chip burner you can load tunes without removing the chip. It takes only seconds to load a calibration. The QuarterHorse gives you the option to self live tune. The overall understanding of how the heui responds to changes has also improved slightly. The 7.3 aftermarket is still alive. Even if some of the larger players have moved on to the newer stuff there will always be the die hard 7.3 fans and as the cost has came down considerably more low budget guys have been picking these up. Also if you are afraid of self tuning a truck there are plenty of seasoned experienced tuners that can write tunes and email them to you.

I stole these from another forum that 907DAVE posted back in 2010. I hope he doesn't mind that I post them here. I messaged him, but got too impatient. :) I just don't think he spends much time on the forums these days.

Looks like there is possibly a stock calibration with a modified calibration overlay. The pw looks a lot lower then the split shot calibration I was looking at.
