Ok, I am now hearing from multiple persons to your sp or lv fluid.... But, Andy recommends mercon v (i guess due to the different clutch plates)- i have had zero issues with the trans and it has merscon v in it, just changed the fluid in it last night with the same. To anyone that has the same trans what fluid do you use?
Am afriad i might be damaging the solenoids by using different fluid.

There's been some debate on this, and experts say solenoid's do work best with the Mercon SP that they were designed for. The aftermarket clutches are a different story, many people have run non recommended fluids without issue. If you have a warranty run what the builder recommends.

Also, if you have no issues no reason to change.

Yeah I've read the same thing. Mark has said to run SP, some say it doesn't matter. Interested to see what other guys say with transmissions other than Andy.

I'd run the fluid that the person that provides the warranty recommends.

Having said that, good luck with your solenoids if you run anything other than MERCON SP or MERCON LV.

Yeah I just talked to Raybestos and the fluid is irrelevant to the clutches. This is going to be solenoid specific.

Mark, say the builder uses Mercon V. Can we switch back to LV or SP without damage? Since there are two fluids in a slight mixture now?

Can you please explain the differences. I have been testing lots of different fluids in lots of different applications and typically other than friction anti shudder and the obvious viscosity differences power fluids have one job and they all do that job to one degree or another. I'm not asking to argue, I'm asking to learn more about the differences I may not be privy to currently.

Thanks in advance!

Suncoast trans in my truck. Plain mercon/dexron Carquest brand ATF in mine. Over 5 years and zero issues. That's what Suncoast and Elite Diesel recommended

Ok guys I did a ton a research and its shows that when the 5r110 first came out in 03- it came factory with mercon v... they switched to sp due to the different paper made clutch plates. Spoke to andy for awhile today and he insisted mercon v as that's what jesse uses and all of the built trans he puts in with no issues.. I am certainly not going against mark here but that's strange how the 5rs came with mercon. .. went to ford today and it said that in their system for fluid requirements.

It's weird what you're saying Greg is it was switched because of the clutches, but Mark is saying its a solenoid issue.

That's why I asked for a more thorough explanation. I've got quite a bit of insight into the tribological aspect of this, and something is a bit off.

Lol yeah. That's what I don't get.

I want to know can we switch from V to SP w.o issues and how much damage is already done once V has been installed.
