Trying to keep a trans alive I wouldn't skimp on something simple as fluid by trying to find the cheapest

Lv superceded sp btw so either of those will work if that's what the trans calls for

And every built 5r we have done we use lv with no issues. And we have experimented with different combos and never had anything bad come of the fluid that was used

Well if the fluid meets the spec, then its good to go. I wouldn't get the plain bottle stuff, but castrol, Valvoline etc will be cheaper than Motorcraft.

I don't like the Max life stuff because its an everything under the kitchen sink approved fluid. Look how many types of fluid it says it works with. LV is LV is LV. Not mercon I, mercon II etc.

It's like salt pepper and sugar all in one lol.

And plus if Andy installs a trans, he's using Mercon V. So the damage is already done in a sense. I want to know how BAD is it. Obvious it isn't that bad, if that's all he uses, doesn't make it right though. Plus I want to see what Mark says about the two fluids mixing, that's a lot of quarts you'll have to run thru the trans to flush it all out .

The concern generally with mixing oils is the base oil. It's very rare when you have problems mixing a group 1,2or 3 with a group 4 PAO. My truck has over 200k on it. 125k of that is tuned and beat on. It has a mix of our 1150 group 4 pao and 7500 group 3 (which is much more viscus than merc V or LP and LV). Direct drive clutches and tc are getting hammered, but the thing daily drives perfect. So unless there is another piece to the puzzle, I don't see a problem mixing ir running V. Our 1150 covers many many specs. Ive used it in damn near everything out there and its performance has been impeccable. I really would like to know the difference other than viscosity and anti shudder between V and LV.

like I mentioned earlier... I run the cheap CARQUEST brand merc/dex ATF and have been running it since 2010 with roughly 30k miles....zero issues.

Can you please explain the differences. I have been testing lots of different fluids in lots of different applications and typically other than friction anti shudder and the obvious viscosity differences power fluids have one job and they all do that job to one degree or another. I'm not asking to argue, I'm asking to learn more about the differences I may not be privy to currently.
The biggest problem comes from an anti-foam additive in MERCON V. It's a tiny particulate. That particulate is an excellent size to get stuck in the solenoids.

Ok guys I did a ton a research and its shows that when the 5r110 first came out in 03- it came factory with mercon v..
And your research is WRONG. Every 5R110 was factory filled with MERCON SP right from the first one. None of them ever left the factory with MERCON V.
You can't second guess Mark on this board...
You can. Sometimes I'm wrong. Just not very often. :redspotdance:

Thats a cheap ass fluid then. In my works, any additive that would do that is garbage and will cause long term issues in any asset. But, I suppose thats the norm now.

If I am wrong then I blame ford's information. That info came straight from the parts computer.. just relaying info
The first part of 2003 was 7.3L/4R100 production. Gas models had the 4R100 through the end of 2004. Those transmissions were built with MERCON fluid. In 2006 MERCON was dropped and MERCON V replaced it. If you look up a 2003 4R100 in Ford's computer it will say MERCON V.

In 2003.25 the 6.0L/5R110 appeared. Those all had MERCON SP.

I have his comp trans and run the valvoline mercon v. Only put about 10k on it but I don't have any issues.

Don't understand what the big deal is with trans fluid. Put in whatever is recommended by the builder and be done with it. Shouldn't be that difficult.

I think it's the fact that the engineer is saying we need LV for the solenoids solely, plates don't matter. Builder says V and that's directly against what Mark says. Conflict, pretty much. A transmission isn't a 500$ item to replace.

Regardless..... Not everyone uses LV and SP and seems to work just fine. Over thinking this trans fluid thing way to much!

Seems... I mean if a company specs a certain fluid it'll have to be for a reason. I've heard of failure before because of not following a certain spec. I'm all ears tho...
