Like I said....alot of guys are running different stuff than SP/LV and have zero issues including myself. I know of some that run Amsoil and don't have any issues. Does Warren have issues with their trans? Do their customers have issues with their trans because they recommend merc V and not SP/LV? Haven't heard of any trans fluid related issues to date because of the fluid recommendation.

This is what I've been running for the last 5+ years because that's what was recommended. I didn't even question it. Not one issue since it was built.

If you go to a parts store, bumper to bumper, the lv is $5.16 plus tax. But we sell all the motorcraft and ac delco stuff so that is why its cheaper.

O'REILLY'S can get the lv but i think it is closer to $6 a qt. Gotta order it in though. If they tell you they can't they are lazy.

Be very careful not to run dex6. Its much lower in viscosity.

Bumping this back up. I can use a dex/mer fluid that is approved ( mercon v) right? It doesn't have to specifically state mercon v only on the front, right?

I see many are mercon/dexron approved

Sp was "dropped" in favor of LV. You can still get it, but no point really. Both are a full synthetic, more resistant to breaking down in high heat and time. Ford did it to further idiot proof the trannies because most people don't service their stuff as they should. When I installed trannies at Elite, it was always generic mercon5. Never had an issue with the fluid. We stressed regular fluid services, and it worked fine. I changed my red truck's fluid every 10k miles because of the way I abused it, and never had a fluid related issue. That being said, I now build my own, using the same types of clutches used by Suncoast, Elite, and probably everybody else. I use, and recommend LV because it's full synthetic, lasts longer, and takes heat better. Maybe there's some property the 5 has to make it better for a specific builder's desires, but it's beyond me.

Wayne....I remember asking Tadd way back when I had my trans built with the Suncoast superduty rebuilt kit, and both him and Suncoast recommended a merc/dex fluid. How well does a fluid like that compare to the ford SP/LV? I've got probably 30k miles on the trans and the pan has been drained a few times and refilled with the same stuff. No issues so far since 2010. Would you recommend switching to the LV?

V? I get the Merc/Dex from Carquest....its the Carquest brand. It actually says "Merc/Dex" on the front of the quart bottle. I posted a pic of the exact stuff I use in post #42

As long as its not dex VIyour probably pretty ok. The Ford isnt really a full syn, its a cheap add pack to give it a higher viscosity index too help with heat. But the anti shudder capabilities are still quite lacking. I would explain further but my iphone 6 plus decided to explode the screen for no reason this morning and its difficult to see what Im typing. The point is as long as the vis and VI are right there isnt much else to screw up other than anti foam and anti shudder, which are a part of the merc/dex spec. If you want a better fluid, look for a group 4 with a high anti shudder spec. Other than that anything to improve the trans would be long term anti wear and detergents, tested at 30k mikes or so to see whats what. Everything else is handled by the trans builder and the tune.

Yeah. I'm looking to run an approved, licensed Mercon V. Not a dex/merc mix that covers 10 other vehicles. Each vehicle/fluid has its own viscosity needs, sure they are close as Jim said but I'd like to run pure Mercon V. Sure it works but is it right? That's where I'm at

Go to ford and get the fluid if u can't find it elsewhere. Simple, not sure what the difficulty is here. Either use mercon v or lv- pick one. You won't damage the trans, just look at the responses on this thread.

The difficulty is finding a mercon v only fluid lol. Not a fluid that has dex and Merc standards. I guess you guys don't understand viscosity? Each fluid has its own pretty much, although close, its not Mercon V specs. I'm not here to argue about it, just looking for recommendations. I found a case of 12 of Havoline licensed Mercon V for 47 I was thinking that Mercon V was swapped with LV / SP. I have to check dealer pricing but I'd assume it's over 50$

Mark stated that the Ford Mercv has large anti foam particles. If thats true, thats not a good thing. They can goat rope the solenoids. If it were me, id look for the Merc V spec with the Allison TES-295 specs well.
