Is there much difference in the s480?

Helluvagood thread!

Well the 480 has never really been considered a DD turbo or street turbo, you will probably not like driving unless your always in the upper RPM's. Brian had that turbo on his drag truck when he ran a 10.xx on spray i believe!

Yes he did but I think he had a pretty big hot side.
I think he made 693hp on fuel.

Do you think I could maybe trim it down a little and make it sorta streetable?

Patrick seemed to think you could drive it on the street and like he said lag lag lag BOOOOMMM

It would hit crazy hard but youd just have to deal with the smoke and lack of low end power

Yeah my buddy with a high hp cummins has one. But his hot side is like a 1.3x and it is unstreetable.
I was hoping I could get away with it.
The motor in my sd is going in my 64 ford with the s480 after I get my other motor done.

I've been in a truck with properly setup compounds.. Absolutely no comparison to running a big single. Compounds FTW!

It may not be cost effective for everyone, but if your looking for the ultimate street truck at 600+hp, compounds is the way to go. I see no way that the power band and street manners can be matched by a single at that power level.

So if im understanding my reading correctly the reason a turbo creates too much back pressure if generally because the exhaust side is too small for the compressor side?

My hx55 has a 66mm compressor side and an 80mm exhaust side, which seems to be a pretty big difference! Itll be interesting to see what my back pressure is tonight when i get my gauge set up

So what would be a good atmosphere turbo for a 38R with 250/100 injectors? Would the 38R make a good HP turbo in a compound set up?

Ask Chillin.

He seems to have hit a good set up with the 38r with a GT47 and now the GT55.

He has 60psi of boost at 1600 rpms. But he has 400/400 with fast mods. (I think)

So yes it should work good.

The 38r and GT47 should work well with 250s. That's also what Chris @ TSD has in his red truck last i saw. Don't remember what size injectors he had, but they werent too big.. That truck runs good.

On the exhaust housing of a turbo the measurements are 2" between the bolt holes vertically and 2 1/2" between them horizontally. Anyone know what that would be considered? I dont believe its T6 or T4 or T4i, it seems entirely weird to me.

Actually i think what i meant was 3 x 3 1/2. Now im second guessing myself, but do either of those seem like legitimate measurments? Ive never been able to find a good fitting gasket for the exhaust housing to the mount

Airflow is on the inside, is match the id. An 1/8 in ridge will create an unbelieviable amount of turbulence.

Compare housing outlet to the pipe inlet. They should be the same id, correct? Assuming they are, otherwise, I would match the larger of the two. The whole idea is a smooth transition.
