Rotella is OK, but do yourself a favor and switch to something else. I personally run Valvoline. Lots of people run Delvac. Lots of people run Rotella also. In some trucks, changing from Rotella to something else makes the truck run a lot better.

I used to run Rotella, I would go through a couple of quarts between changes. Truck ran a little rough. Since changing to Valvoline, one quart between changes, runs a lot smoother and starts better.

I had the same results as you on the rotella. same with delvac, motorcraft and kendall. all used more than a quart even with 2500 mile oci's. Valvoline and cheveron delo are the only ones I have used that I could go 5k oci with only using 1 to 1.5 qt of oil... the valvoline started to change idle and startups near 3500 to 4k though.. delo is the one that lasted the longest without change. usually around 4500 miles it would start acting different.

I would like some clarification on the "starts better" and "idle". Since the battery swap 10 fold difference in start up and glow plug duration but hot and moderate hot starts are becoming longer and hesitates to fire after one full cycle (guesstimate) then cranks right over fine. The tick is far more noticeable in humid or rainy weather conditions as of recently when I let of the throttle it hesitates to return to idle or is skiping in injection timing to idle or the gear/road speed and conditions. It almost wants to stop firing the injectors or has lack of pressure to do so since I replaced the o-ring and tightened the fitting.
I am curious if a lot crap is floating around inside the system since the failure? Should I pull the valve covers to see if any sludge mix is accumulated or is there a better way. I did a oil change at 7/days 517/miles stuff was in the pan and filter again should I do another since I have done another 1700 ish miles.
Since the last change I have lost about .5 quart it probally does not help I need a new oil pan. I may just conver to 5w-40 valvoline I do not know any where that carries delo locally in the amounts I need.

I'll be around this weekend if you want to get that pig scanned and run a few diagnostic checks.

walmart is where I get delo. wouldnt hurt to change the oil again and get it scanned!! that will help a ton if any codes or diagnostic issues pop up.

I am going to guess this is going to end up being injectors.

Run all the normal tests if you get it hooked up and honestly if you are going to be keeping and working on this or really any vehicle you should invest in auto enginuity

Run a contribution test and buzz test I am willing to bet that comes back with some issues.

Did you ever find the valley oil leak?

How many miles is on this engine again?

Tarm buddy 7.3 god I need to pick your brain some. Today Tom ran all the tests holding 2400-2600psi icp @ 40% duty cycle ipr is good and all but when he went to start it again it cranked a good 3+ cycles before firing the engine was warm this happens once in a blue moon usually it's longer starting when warm. The exhaust pressure sensor is throwing a code I'll try cleaning it before replacing it. The ticking is a manifold leak most likely on the passenger side soot is showing up on the ic pipe. Thoughts ideas.

those numbers are what stock tuning usually call for.

did you change the oil yet?

The hot cranking issue is a bad injector (s). Almost certainly. The hot oil is thin and the injector with bad oil side is puking oil. Hard to start in low icp situations.

There is probably a miss too at anything under 50% throttle.

That's tomorrow I am having someone else do it this time the god damn filter is tighter than hell again. I asked the guy to put it on finger tight/filled it with oil and lathered the oring with oil and bam it did it again he had to use a strap style snap on filter wrench and a chain style with a ratchet two person job. I am going to try valvoline 15 40 but the pass side manifold is leaking at the gasket on the back two from corrosion and p0470/p0478 dtcs I need to deal with thanks for tom running the codes for me. I tried the wix style filter this time it is worse than the fl1995 motorcraft I am still working slurry out of the cooling system. Should I just flush it with some type of detergent or standard flush now?

dam that sucks. I have yet to experience that issue with an oil filter. I fill the filter as far as I can, lube the gasket and tighten it with one hand. at most, I use 2 hands to get them off.

Ok, I was not very in depth on that whole part it is once in a blue moon for a long start like what tom experienced it did that more with the old batteries once since new ones. The standard long in my terms a little longer than in the morning more so when it is above 70* on the start up if it sits for a little bit after running for awhile. He did a imjector buzz test but the engime was warm which is not odeal.

Haha I know I was so used to using my hands or maybe some channel locks or a filter wrench and sand paper it is ridiculous. Not my problem ill let someone else do it it maybe the angle to as I am doing it in my drive way on jackstands.

Would having a 29(245/75r16) versus basically a 32(265/75r16) have any effect on the results incured? From the difference in gearing, engine speed and transmission gear drives?

It really sounds like an injector/s to me. Most likely you have a injector having oil blow by the worn poppet and taking the oil volume from the HPOP so it takes longer cranking to get enough pressure to build up to over come this "leak"

When its hot such as after he ran all those hard runs to check HPOP ICP etc. Get the engine warm like that again. This time monitor the ICP while you are cranking it to start. See how long it takes to build to 450-500 psi, which is typically what it takes to get these engines to fire up.

I would see what Golfer ( Dave) has to say as he has seen it all many times over.

So I am looking at a set of injectors and full fluid swap already did a oil cooler in a matter of 2k miles. I guess a blank check is needed somedays.
