Whats the average timing seen on a race tune

The whole timing thing is a little confusing and decieving. when you say 15 degrees thats for the main event, there is a pilot injection cycle before that that you cant really monitor, but its also not as important. I know Gearhead messes with it more than most to help spool ect, i pretty much run the h&s timing tables and trim off a little on the top

up to 3500 rpm i only run 12 degrees, after that it tapers up to 15 to 4000 rpm, h&s calls for a similar timing but up to 18 degrees after something like 3350 rpm. On a stock truck it really doesnt matter because only on the dyno will it actually run out passed 3300 rpm, the shifts are set for 3200

Im calling for 3700 rpm shifts since my peak power is right at 3500, thus keeping in the power as much as possible. So to some degree you could say im only running 12 degrees but i will say max at 4k rpm is 15. Not sure what others call for i think 12 degrees is pretty standard but maybe someone will chime in and correct me

ok, I got a little update on my end, as in my original post I stated that cold start was very very smokey. I raised rail pressure at idle from 7500 to 12k during cold start, tapering back down to the 7500 when its hot, so far so good, almost no smoke at start up and high idle is much smoother ect. Ill take a video sometime this week of how its doing.

Dumb question Dustin but, did you take some pw away when you raised the rail pressure that much? Just didn't know how much more fuel would be dumped into the cylander with the bump in pressure. Also can you pull enough pw at idle with not such a drastic increase in rail pressure to still idle ok? Just curious i guess.

UPDATE-

we flowed the current elite 200 (54 lpm) , dustins 200hp nozzle was an older version of 48 lpm which is much closer to a 150hp nozzle , as the scale elite used previously has changed over a year or more's time . when dustin got his they were elite 200's. The test was Elite's current 200hp VS. a standard 100% (midwest diesel, MPD , Rudy's, innovative ) and the flow rate was almost identicle. both were right at 54LPM give or take a fraction. so in terms of dustin's test, it shows the elite nozzle was substanially smaller. does this mean his 50hp gain is purely based on flow? no idea. next test will be the elite 200 with 8 hole nozzle vs the same flow 6 hole on my green truck. that being said , exergy rated both nozzles on their scale at 110% . The test will reflect more than just peak hp, but low end and top end smoke, heat, and performance.

Glad to see the results coming in! My question is did elite have to rescale their 15% nozzles also? Maybe that was my troubles, I got a first gen set of nozzles that didn't flow as expected?

Either way, kudos to you guys for taking the time to put the info together for us!

good question. but i get the feeling there may have been a nozzle "issue" in your case because your results were so drastic. but maybe the difference is larger on a smaller nozzle. i think that test should happen too. real world on a truck.

Thanks to everyone who put this test together. The results are definitely not something I would have predicted a few months ago.

Yeah i agree, thanks mike and everyone who made the actual nozzle test happen. Glad to see this follow up so quickly.

Seams as tho every nozzle needs tested now LOL
