I wonder how possible that would be without taking the top half of the motor off?

All you need to remove is the turbo and pedestol. Id go ahead and remlvevthe oil/fuel filter housing as well just for the extra room. They're easy to remove.

And the alt. I've never been able to get the turbo out of there with the alt still on. But I guess having all that off and out of the way would make life a little easier.

I'd rather remove all that than fool with the ac stuff. I've already had the top half off this truck twice since I've owned it.

I've never pulled the alternator to remove or replace a turbo. Do you have the dual setup?

Nope. Although I've never tried removing it where the oil/fuel filters are. Not like its that hard to take the alternator off...PITA part is getting to the freakin tensioner.

FWIW, you can just roll the alternator off and on without locking out the tensioner. The only part that can be a PITA is if the belt slips one rib when you do it. Now, if you have a tool for this tensioner, it is easy if you can feel where the tensioner lock-out us.

I've never locked it out. I have a long 1/2" ratchet that I just rotate the tensioner with until I can get the belt on. Sort of a pain by yourself to juggle all that. Worst part is just getting the ratchet aligned on the tensioner.

Still don't get why we are talking about removing the alternator though lol - like wilbur said you do not need to remove it to pull the turbo?

Well I figured having it out of the way would free up a little more room along the front end. Especially since I'll be spending a good bit of time either bending over or laying across the top torqueing those studs.

Well, Memphis Motor Werks is out of the question. Dude quoted me $1200 to work over a set of heads. Said he's only done 2 pair (both ff ambulances), but has the tools needed.

He then tried to convince me these heads are aluminum, therefore there is no way, or reason, to magnaflux them. Also stated that unless I'm running some really big "software", that he'd bet money my valve guides are not cracked. Then said he didn't understand why I'd want to pull the heads off at only 155,000 miles....said there's no reason unless it's "burning oil or something".

Aside from the $1200 quote, I think I'd still rather find someone with at least some 6.0 experience/knowledge. Nice guy though, I'll give him that.

I'm serious...pull with left hand from passenger fender upward - flip tensioner kick stand with right hand or have a buddy under truck flip it. Install new belt give it a tug and the spring release will reset the kickstand

I didn't know it worked that way. That'll sure make like easier. I've been trying to crank the tensioner over with one hand while sliding the belt on with the other.

I must have a stronger spring. Even with 2 hands I can't pull it enough to get past the lip, and I even had a can of spinach before I tried. All the kids can do a search on Popeye to figure that one out.

What about trying dynotech on old 78? I know they build dirt track motors. I used to buy methanol from them back when I was racing four wheelers. Address: 5516 Old US Highway 78, Memphis, TN 38118
Phone: (901) 795-3000
Its worth a shot.
